I think that someone must have been hurt, otherwise, why would she keep mentioning the blood, and screaming, and looking at the knife?

But... I think you're right that it could be that she had enough control to tell the children to leave, and then lock herself in, then stab herself to make sure she couldn't go after them.

Is that a big Arab racing area? Term could apply to more than one thing.

From the facebook chat: That [being in a character's head through the change to being a werewolf] sounds like a very good idea for a short story . . . no promises though. There is a little of that in Dead Heat.

I’m going to apologize in advance for this long post and also if I sound bossy on the topic, Arabian horses are near and dear to me!

I just got through reading this whole thread, (thank goodness I got here before it grew TOO big!  Lol) and I’ve got a few comments not too related to the books.  First of all, to those who say that Arabian horses aren’t good for beginning riders, you can’t paint a whole breed of horse with a single brush.  Yes, they can be high strung, but they aren’t all the same.  They are often quite smart which can be a problem, because smart horses can be a challenge, but mostly the reputation of being too high strung is due to poor breeding, poor training, and too many people not willing to geld their “Prize” Arabian stallions which means they add to the poor breeding out there .

-- * -- Yes, that’s a huge pet peeve of mine from back in the days of working for a trainer who had to deal with people sending those ‘prizes’ to be trained and then being upset when they don’t live up to the expectations of the owners who have MUCH more money than brains.  They absolutely refused to listen to the trainers who tried to (gently and carefully) explain that while the horse was not (and never would be) a first rate stallion, it could very well be a perfectly awesome gelding.  Arabians are very often amazingly gentle creatures when bred properly, raised properly, trained properly and treated right.

Like any other breed of animal, there is a spectrum of personalities and there are absolutely good individuals out there of any breed which can be great for beginner riders, which from reading the sample chapter, Anna isn’t so much.

Scottsdale AZ has a huge number of Arabian Horse farms both for breeding and training, and the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is a HUGE event in the Arabian world.  The excitement of it all still gets me tingling just from thinking about it even after YEARS away from that world!

Yep, there are always outliers, the extra mellow, as well as the crazed ones.
Like any other type of animal that humans are involved with, there can be poor breeding & training.

Arabs aren't really crazed, just highly reactive on average compared with other breeds. That reactivity is hard for a beginner who's not in full control of their aids, especially the reins and legs. And the average beginner's aids are quite hard on a reactive horse.

By the same token, there are lots of mutts and quarter horses who are superb rides for a more advanced rider. Arabs tend to be tops for endurance, though, which would make one a good choice for the kind of riding Charles and Anna probably do. And an Arab is kind of blingy as horses go, which would fit with Charles' gift giving tastes.
