Is the sad face due to their being boring, the state of the logs, the state of the care or some other issue?

"Hunter" by Mercedes Lackey.  Very her; lots of variant repetitions of the same basic information to pad the word count.

Boring. No plot, poor characterization, repetitive. 9)

Ursula Vernon tastes shapes in foods, or at least wines.
This is not a motivation for doing evil.  I trust this was a character trait rather than 'cause'?

A character trait, inherited from his father, and part of his feeling isolated.

Isn't boring what you want in such logs? In any such documentation I've been involved with drama in the logbook meant trouble on the ground.
(It should have meant trouble at sea for my four years in the navy, but I was assigned to the SeaBees, and never stepped foot on a ship.)

Oh ho!  If I sent you a short story I wrote, (it was for one of the writing group challenges, way back when) would you be willing to see if you could read it, and tell me if it evokes her writing, to you?
