I remember loving the Painted Man, for some reason the UK edition had a slightly different title ??? and I think that is his first book not just the first in the series. I could be wrong of course.

Umh?
We've had our toad for the 2020s, it's got to get better from here!
But do beware the toad burps.

Just finished a reread of Bill Bryson's A Walk In The Woods. I'd forgotten how funny it was. Now I really want to see the movie. I can totally see Nick Nolte as Katz, though Redford as Bryson is a bit of a stretch imo.

Thanks for that info, Varg. In that case, I might give the next one a try.

Aaaaaaand, a chemistry teacher in our area set her hair on fire yesterday. Also at least one student's hair, and four others were burned. No one was wearing protective gear *sigh*. I don't think that's what your author had in mind.

Probably not. LOL   Wonder if any protective gear was available?

The Bluebird Effect: Uncommon Bonds With Common Birds, by Julie Zickefoose

Zickefoose is someone who intended from an early age to study ornithology at Cornell, but was informed that her grades were not good enough to study it anywhere. So she managed to get into ornithology by the back door, and has been invited to speak at Cornell. This makes me very happy. She is also a very decent artist and rehabilitator, so the book is a lot of fun to read. Each chapter is on a different species.

Also have read all my recent Nook purchases. The two Dana Stabenow mysteries are not necessarily her best work, but one is pivotal to the series. They read very seat-of-the-pants, like it took her right up to the end to decide who the culprit was. Nevertheless they have her brand of character, setting, humor and suspense, similar to PB or IA, but in the RL setting of the Alaskan bush. Come to think of it, that's a pretty alien world to most of us. Anyway, I am waiting patiently, more or less, for the next in the series.

Animals Make Us Human by Temple Grandin. This is a very interesting read because it draws on some of the newer theories of emotion. There is an introductory chapter on theory and then chapters for the various domestic species, plus one each for wildlife and zoos. The subtitle is Creating The Best Life For Animals. Of course most of the information applies to human animals as well.
