Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones  - a book about Sirius the Dog Star becoming an actual dog
Watchers by Dean Koontz
Where the Red Fern Grows - my favorite book growing up

I just noticed this thread, and wanted to mention John Taintor Foote's short fiction, of roughly the same vintage as Lad, A Dog, and Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak mystery series, which features Kate's wolf hybrid Mutt as a main character.
