Title: [A&O #4] Dead Heat Discussion *****SPOILERS******
Post by: Kyria on March 04, 2015, 09:30:50 am
Had a moment to post a quick note here and didn't see a new Dead Heat thread.  Let's use spoiler tags until the mods tell us not to, even with the warning in the thread title, okay?

Very much enjoyed the book.  Made me laugh, made me cry (which is a rare thing, but Patty has a knack for it).

My main complaint on this first read-through is I knew who the major bad guy was the moment they met her.  Dear Charles, you should know by now that when you're hunting someone who is aware of the supernatural, anybody who wears enough perfume to trick your nose is instantly suspect.  Love, [kyria].  PS - somebody should have thought to talk to the kids about anybody at the school who didn't seem right.  But, if Charles had figured it out when he first met the antagonist, it would have been a dang short book.  So I'll overlook it.

I love the fact that Patty describes horses like someone who not only is familiar with horses, but loves them.  Which we knew, but still.  It's vivid.  Makes me restless, because I haven't had an opportunity to ride in far too long.

I like the variety in Patty's characters.  For instance, I don't like Hosteen nearly as much as I liked the Olde Towne Alpha, whose name escapes me at the moment.  And Maggie seemed a little petty.  But that's realistic.  Gives the stories depth.

Isaac. - I pointed out to Mike Briggs last night that There is the Alpha and the Omega named Isaac...  He answered, "I said Patty is good at creating characters, not naming them!" and we all laughed.... Hi, Kara...

You know, in real life, most people know several people who have the same name.  I once took a trip where literally 1 in 7 of the people on the (very full) bus shared my first name.  And at one point almost 1 in 4 of my dance class shared my first name (and the rest, it seemed, were all named Jessica).  So as long as characters who share names are easy to tell apart, it doesn't bother me.  But I'm bad with names anyway.

I was thinking he was Isaac, and then I talked myself out of that.  Someday I'm going to learn to trust myself.

I was wondering if Patty has a crush on James Marsden ("X-Men", "Enchanted", etc.) to name the Cantrip agent Jim Marsden.  Not that there is anything wrong with having a crush on the actor!  He is definitely crush-worthy!

I was glad to see that the Cantrip agents weren't idiots, and that Charles and Anna could work with them.  I would like to see more of this pair of agents, and actually find out a little more about Hollister Leeds, the half-fae Cantrip agent.  He had a back-story that I would like to hear more about.  It was also nice to see that government agents could be competent and worthy of respect (Marsden, Leeds and Agent Leslie Fisher).

I always like how in the Charles and Anna books, they are a team.  In the first couple of books, Anna saved the day.  In the third book, Charles killed the monster.  And now, in this book, the fae monster was actually taken out by the team of Charles, Joseph, and Anna.  Thank you, Patty, for letting the human get some licks in, even if the spirits of the dead were helping.  It was Joseph's intelligence that saved Mackie in the end!

All in all, a great book!

I loved the book.  But we didn't get any input as to whether or not Chelsea was having trouble changing back or control issues.  Also it seems like some of the kids are talents.  Will we ever hear more about that?

I doubt we'll hear more about the kids until Patty decides to do a short story. Charles and Anna do tend to travel around a lot. None of their stories have taken place in the same place. We might hear about Chelsea in a later book as a casual mention. Then again, Brother Wolf did think it was possible she would be more dominant then the current alpha, so we might hear news of her becoming an alpha in a few years book time.

I agree about Chelsea, Zealith.

Was anyone else bothered when Anna wondered how Chelsea would adapt to the werewolf laws that would rank her at the bottom despite the fact that she was more dominant than the second just because she was female? I thought we would be over this by now. And it irks me that Anna accepts that kind of thing as a norm, when she saw firsthand how horrible it is to be beaten down just because of your gender. And why has she never addressed the sexism with Bran, who might actually listen to her? If this aspect of werewolf society is not addressed and rectified soon...

Do you not think that it's just barely possible Ms.Briggs is setting Chelsea up to be a change agent in future books?

Labmate speculates that Chelsea will be the first female Alpha.

It seems normal (regrettable, perhaps, but normal) that a major cultural shift in male-female roles would take quite some time among beings as long-lived as werewolves.  Consider how long this is taking among us "normal" short-lived humans!  The fact that there is change taking place at all (most observable so far in Adam & Mercy's pack) is probably more remarkable than the fact that it isn't all tidied up yet.

I think we see several potential agents of change being developed, with varying degrees of influence on Bran, and thus on the larger werewolf culture.

I'm doing a re-read of this now, and catching some subtle things that I missed on earlier reads, like the moment at the horse show with Ms. Edison's "ah-hah" moment.

Also, reading this thread, I wonder if we're making assumptions of our own.  How do we know that Anna is NOT advocating for ranking females by actual dominance rather than mate/lack of mate?

I suddenly wondered too if maybe Anna & Mercy aren't working by internet on "Werewolf 101" book, as they've both mentioned the lack of any consistency in what werewolves learn.

Hmm? Writing a textbook, in the manner of the Letter Game as shown in the "Cecelia and Kate" books by Patricia Wrede? An interesting possibility.
