Title: [Mercy #1] Moon Called Discussion
Post by: Kiersten Walks Funny on December 16, 2007, 10:58:13 am
Just out of curiosity....what exactly was said between Sam and Adam in the van on the way back from Montana, while Mercy was waiting outside (presumably freezing her behind off)?

Samuel apologized.  He was antagonizing Adam -- when Adam wasn't in shape to defend himself.  He just didn't want to do it in front of Mercy -- especially as some of the things he had to say were just going to tick her off.  Things like who she might belong to and caveman things like that.
Patty :)

oohh thats a good question, i was wondering about that too.  i really hope she answers this ;D

I just thought since was the first book that started of the series- and I felt sorry for this section. Its all lonely and  it hasn't got any posts yet, I thought I would start off what were peoples' first impression of the characters and what do you expect in the future ( for all the newbies :) )

I remember ordering the book about 2 years ago and it was languishing in my TBR pile which sometimes scares me. I didnt have high expectations when I picked up the book- but I got hooked by page 5 I think, while I was reading it I felt like ohhhhh this is good and I found myself rereading it 3 times and started looking at Patty 's backlist. I love when a book surprises me like this, and now I am hooked. ;D

Moon Called was the first Urban Fantasy book I read.  I ordered it online at the same time I got Od Magic after I got home from having my second child.  I used to stick with sci-fi and fantasy, but I thought i'd try it out because I liked the Raven books and I knew I would need something very interesting during 3 am nursing/rocking sessions. I all most changed my mind because I thought the cover was a little bit... welll...
Anyway, I bought it and read it and LOVED it.  I was completely enthralled with the characters and the idea of such an interesting story happening in a town not too far from me.
Moon Called opened my mind to an entire genre I had dismissed.  After loving Moon Called I read a bunch of other series in the genre and enjoyed all of them ( Sookie and Rachel Morgan are my other favorites) while i patiently awaited Blood Bound.
Blood Bound was excellent, even though my son's nickname is Wulfie and the Wulfe in the books freaks me out!
I've never really been the 'waiting for sequels' kind of reader and now my husband makes fun me :)

This was a good idea HAS  ;D

I discovered the Hurog books first, but I love every Briggs book I've read!  Having read the Hurog books I was naturally keen to find more by this amazing author...and one day I saw a friend and co-worker reading Moon Called!  I was completely excited and after she told me about the series I went and bought both Mercy books off eBay as quick as I could! ;D  I discovered the Mercy books around the time I found Stephenie Meyer, so my taste in books gravitated from traditional fantasy to an interest in the paranormal...and I can see myself branching out even more as I read all these great recommendations people have here!  Good fun! ;D

Well, I found out about Mrs. Briggs mostly by chance. I've been an urban fantasy reader for 3 years now and I don't remember what I was looking for on amazon this past summer, but I kept stumbling across comments such as "...good, but not as good as Patricia Briggs' stories" or "...if you like this genre than you have to read Patricia Briggs' books", things like these. So, after a while I said, "Well, let's go see these books", read the synopses, got hooked up and ordered Moon Called and Blood Bound right away. I read them both in 36 hours, I had just finished my last exam of the summer session and needed my fix of reading and Mrs. Briggs saved me ;D Then I came to the hurog website to check when the next instalment in the series was due to be released, discovered the forum (that had just opened, our hostess didn't know anything about it at that time :D) and started hanging out here, harassing perfectly respectable people ;)

Yes!  It's the little details that bring her home in such a real way - like making cookies when your upset, having a messy room and showering at night and then braiding you hair. The only thing is ... sometimes i think she should eat some of those cookies instead of just bake them! :)  I eat what I bake ;) In fact when I bake because I'm upset - I eat Most of what I baked and I give the rest to neighbors or I'd eat it too.

I go with the eating cookie thing too, only I'm not patient enough to bake them. So I bake alot at a time, then keep them in the feezer, where I'm less tempted to eat them right away.

Interesting....(*ponders a bit*)

Sam does almost drive Mercy to Adam and vice versa. If you think about it Mercy really doesn't listen and tends to do the opposite of what people say and Adam needed a little guy push to stir up some emotion or at least make those emotions stronger. Makes you wonder if it was planned by someone (uhum Bran), but hey it could all be nonsense speculation on my part.

My reason for picking up Moon Called was that my friend Sparky threatened me!  Actually, she gave me a copy and I got hooked.  She had been talking around the book for a while (one of Patty's first readers), and I got to see the cover when it was finalized.  THAT was a thrill.

I went to Radcon (my first Radcon) this past month and saw Patty Briggs there during opening ceremonies. They briefly introduced her to the audience and mentioned she’d written some bestsellers and used to live in the Tri-Cities.

I thought two things:

1.) Cool! I’ll have to check out her stuff.
2.) She seems familiar… I think I was her mail lady a long time ago. Lol!

Anyway, I bought Moon Called and was surprised it took place in the Tri-Cities. The characters were interesting, the book was fast paced and I was hooked. I read all three books in less than a week and half.

Sparky got me hooked too, although I read the Hurog books first.  I love that I hear Patty's voice in her characters, and I love the fact that this is my town, and I know where everything is. Sometimes as I am driving I think, "Oh yeah, this is where ..... happened."

To be honest Ive held off reading them until the books were released by Orbit in the UK.  Whilst Im not a fan of the covers I have definitely enjoyed the first novel Moon Called.  As a bright side I wont have to wait years for future novels just a month or so.  LOL  So will join in the other threads when I catch up.

Sorry but I am a bit lost...

Sam apologized for provoking Adam but at the same time made sure Adam knew he still wanted Mercy?
And that since Mercy was with him when she was 16... it wouldn't be too difficult for Sam to win her back...
I guess that makes sense, in a male werewolf (or even human) way.

But were does Bran come in this? After all when Adam decided to stay close to Mercy he was married, even if Bran had told him to keep an eye on her I don't think he was thinking about claiming her back then. Unless of course if Bran is alot more Psychic than I think he is (and I know he is!!!!) and could see the future of Adam with Mercy...

But in IK Adam said that Sam was always in the competition for Mercy's heart, "at least now I'm competing with the man" or something like that ( ???) Ugh! i would just love to be close to even one of Adam's and Sam's conversations..... even if it was only in IK when Saqm goes to tell Adam what Mercy was up to and that he was no more competing.... Now that would be fan to read.....

But to stay on topic (as much as possible!) how did Sam make it possible for Adam and Mercy to get this close? Sure, by making himself a competitor was enough for Adam... But Mercy? Unless.... well if she was sub-conciously thinking about how she and Sam would be able to work out in a relationship..... It could have the same effect... Oh... I don't know my brain just stopped working on this subject.... :-\
Title: Re: Moon Called Discussion
Post by: Has on May 28, 2008, 09:55:48 am
I think Patty answered that somewhere - on the boards I think.
From what I remembered Sam may have apologized about antagonizing Adam especially when he was hurt and short tempered from the pain which will affect his control. They probably reached an agreement about not doing anything that might start a fight. Although I would love to read that scene!

From Adam's perspective regarding his feelings about Mercy- dont forget he was married when he moved to the Tri-Cities - it wasnt until a short while before Moon Called that Adam proclaimed Mercy as his mate due to an incident which Patty hinted but hasn't said what it was :)

I think like Mercy said in IK - Sam was not IN love with her - he would have been more persistant in his courting. He was always the one the backed down when things got heated between them - and it was the other way round with Adam and Mercy they always got interrupted. There would also have been a fight between him and Adam. Especially since Sam is more dominant than Adam in that respect. I think subconsciously Sam knew he didnt have a chance with Mercy especially since he saw that she was different to the girl that he knew and also her feelings for Adam.

I do agree about your points with Bran though- I do think he saw something about Adam and Mercy  :)

Ooh, I hadn't thought it through that since he was married at the time, Adam hadn't called Mercy his mate as soon as his pack had arrived there. Now I'm really curious as to why he felt he needed to later on. Might be question for Patty time...

I think in the last chat or was it the previous one - cant remember but Patty said that Adam was didnt have feelings for Mercy while he was married to his ex. But his ex kept fighting with him that he had feelings for Mercy.
- I found the chat transcript :) explains it better

Quote
7:56 Patty However, as things in his marriage started "going South", he liked her a little too much. He backed away. You can't hide things like emotions from werewolves.
7:56 Erin Ooo, just found the smiley box
7:56 Patty Adam is an honorable person, though. He certainly didn't love her at that point.
7:56 Mellie The smiley box is made of happy
7:57 PattiL joins Main
7:57 Patty It was just one of those "danger zones" and he stayed back. I don't know how much his wife knew -- but I do know what she suspected at the end. Which was wrong. However -- have you ever noticed how if someone keeps thinking you "like" someone.
7:58 Mellie What are some of the effects of being claimed as a mate? I remember there was some mention of there actually being more than just a statement about it.
7:58 priss Mellie---i dont know...that 7th smile looks kind of stoned...but in a way thats kind of happy
7:58 Patty Eventually you take a good long look at that someone and think , , , yeah maybe.l
7:58 Mellie The little smiley with the hearts makes me happy XD
7:58 Has Adam's ex is going to feel even more bitter and vindicated that she was right about her suspicions when she finds out that they are mated now though
7:58 Patty Absolutely Has.
7:58 Erin LOL - Like the "Something to Talk About" song. That answers that question. Cheating just didn't seem to fit Adam.
7:59 Patty Coolness. The Author settles back for some really awesome fireworks <grin>.
7:59 priss cheating really doesnt fit adam...he's too good of a guy
7:59 glow1nthedark I don't Mercy would of started things up with him while he was married anyway
7:59 Patty No. Adam would never cheat.
7:59 Patty And no. Taking it up with a married man is just . . .too stupid for words.
8:00 Has And his wife from the sounds of things wasnt happy about living with the pack despite what she knew
8:00 Patty A man who will cheat on his wife, will cheat in everything else too.
8:00 Patty And Mercy is Not stupid.

Hope this helps :)
Title: Re: Moon Called Discussion
Post by: white_unicorn on May 28, 2008, 11:56:26 pm
I never thought Mercy that stupid, (to take ity up with a married man) and Adam is too good to cheat. So it makes sense that Adam would keep an eye on her as to protect her from the pack, but wouldn't take it any further....

My guess is that one of Adam's wolves, (Paul could be a candidate ;D) didn't like a coyote in his region and maybe the 'magic' of the pack made Adam aware of the threat, if we consider his ex-wife's 'jealousy' that he had feelings for Mercy... Well we all know that if someone says that this guy likes you, or that yeah, you must like that guy... your sub-concious (or even your concious mind) makes you react as if that was a fact, in either way.

As for Samuel, he has to feel something for Mercy, not love in the "Die for you" way, but lust is something they both feel.... "If I were human the heat between us would be enough" he said, so it's the wolf in him that made the crucial decision of backing down... If it was only his human part he wouldn't leave Mercy to Adam.... Two - Natures make things too complicated.... :D

I wonder if the "incident" that made Adam claim Mercy will show up in the graphic novels coming out? I know I did read somewhere that the first grahic novel is about Mercy's arrival in Tri-Cities.
And Sam's arrival did force Mercy to make a decision. She loved them both too much to just string them along until they fought it out. She is also not that kind of girl. I do like that idea about Bran planning this though, both Mercy and Sam needed to move on, and they could not do that until they talked it out and figured out exactly what they felt about each other. Bran would have hated to see them afraid of relationships for the rest of their lives, and Mercy driving Adam all the way to Montana would have proved to Bran that she has matured enough to be able to face Sam and not just follow him around like a puppy. (Pun intended :D)
Title: Re: Moon Called Discussion
Post by: Has on May 29, 2008, 12:42:45 pm
I think the prequel comic will be set when Mercy just arrives in the Tri-Cities- unless the timeline jumps ahead to the time when Adam proclaims Mercy as his mate.

I think something that Honey says in IK - also makes it sound that other wolves were interested in claiming Mercy as a mate as well so that is another factor about Adam claiming Mercy to protect her from the pack.

I saw a review for the first three books in a magazine I like which was fairly decent, and I was going on holiday for a few weeks, so I thought, hey why not? and got Moon Called.

Really liked it, thought the characters were interestingly defined and I have an interest in werewolf stories (I think they are waaay underrepresented) so it was perfect for a nice summer read.

Not a fan of the vampires though, so I'm just gonna have to grit my teeth and read Blood Bound to get the benefit of the character goodness.

I can't really remember how I decided to order Moon Called and Blood Bound (I just checked though and I had to 'harass' relatives in Sweden since UK amazon wouldn't send either here.) Blood bound was sent by my relatives earlier than moon called and I got hooked... after that the story is known....

Though I guess my 1st impression was of Blood Bound not Moon Called and I loved the characters and story....

Moon Called and Blood Bound were in my Amazon recomendations list and after reading the summary, I just ordered them.  8) I have not been dissapointed.

Now September has come and I'm  allowed to buy new books again, so part three will be bought today. ;D

Mercy feels lilke she could be someone you meet at the grocery store, or in the DMV line or something, not distant like most 'real world' paranormal fiction characters.

Exactly that was the reason, why I liked to books. Not some invincible hero, but an almost "normal" person, very likable.

I just finished re-reading Moon Called last night and was reminded of what a great book that was.  Well writen, exciting story that even the second time around remains a page-turner!   ;D

Mercy feels lilke she could be someone you meet at the grocery store, or in the DMV line or something, not distant like most 'real world' paranormal fiction characters.

That's definetly one of the things I like about her character.  She gets by on smarts and determination, rather than just having some über-powers that trump whatever dire situation she finds herself in.  Plus she is just so darn likable, the sort of person you would like to call a friend in real life.  :D

I was just thumbing through books at Borders, looking for something interesting, when I saw the cover of Moon Called. Now I know it's ironic, "don't judge a book by it's cover", but this cover got me hooked before I read anything. It's still one of my favorite illustrations. And I'm an Illustration major in college!

I read Blood Bound first and really liked it. The problem was I thought it was the first book, so when I started Moon Called, I was way confused. Moon Called felt like a first book, where the main goal was introducing the characters. I liked Blood Bound better because, hey vampires, but I was pleased enough that I went for the third book.

I love coming into a series when its been established. I hate waiting a year between books.

Post by: Darcia on June 30, 2009, 12:15:09 pm
Hi,

I don't know where this question belongs to, so I'll post it here for the lack of a better fitting category.

I vaguely remember a scene in one of the first 4 books (I think) where Mercy meets someone who sais something rude and then she tells about a proverb her mother told her once. It was something like: "Always trust the firsdt thing out of someone's mouth to show his true character" or the like.

Does anyone remember which book this quote is from? Or perhaps the person who this refers to?

Thanks!
Darcia

Darcia, I'm pretty sure it's from Moon Called. Mercy thought of the proverb when Sam snapped at her after she brought Mac and Adam to the Marrok, and then he apologized.

". . . my mother once told me that you had to trust that the first  thing out of a person's mouth was truth.  After they have a chance to think about it, they'll change what they say to be more socially acceptable, something they think you'll be happier with, something that will get the results they want."  (MC 88)

Maybe its the love thing... Where they are pushing the powers around over Mercy. The tension. I think that part was wrote to a Tee. Sam being more Dominant but Adam still growling. The fact she made Sam say sorry to Adam.... Your that caught up in the book by that scene your jiggling in your seat. LOL

Post by: Darcia on May 31, 2010, 04:40:53 am
Hi everyone,

I vaguely remember a scene where Mercy puts on a shirt with text on it, it was something like:
"real luck is - belgian chocolate - german engeneering..."  (and sth else)
Does anyone of you know the page number where the Shirt is described? I couldn't find it -.-

Here's the description of the shirt: The T-shirt was one Stefan himself had given me for teaching him how to correct the timing on his bus. It read “Happiness is German engineering, Italian cooking, and Belgian chocolate” and bore a large stain from the cocoa I spilled on it.

I know it's toward the end of chapter 9. *goes to check* In the paperback version (and I kind of think it might be the same in hardcover, but I'm not sure), it's on page 159. Hope that helps!

I'm doing a re-read over the holiday season. Just started into Moon Called. I do love Mac's character, I love those little inklings of what he could have been and maybe in an alternate universe he's an Alpha of his own pack.  :-'

One of my favorite parts early in the book is the introduction of Adam's character through his note on Medea's cat carrier. Mercy's line of "Did the mean old werewolf stick the kitty in the box and leave her?" and the Mercy's realizing the he had held Medea on his lap for a while before bringing her over. I've always really enjoyed that reveal.

That and when he first shows up at the garage thinking that Mercy killed one of his werewolves and she was thinking..."Maybe I should have explained matters better when I had him on the phone, but where's the fun in that?" I just got such a kick out how she liked to tease him. So much fun.

I love that scene! I think I became a firm fan of Adam with that scene and how he treated Medea. Also when he entered the garage I love the tension between them - I loved how subtle it was but it underlined their interaction. I fancy a reread now :D

I perhaps have extra copies.

I'm at the part where Mac is licking Mercy's stomach.  >D Then Adam has his "She is mine." moment.  :-LOVE I do really enjoy this introduction to the Mercy/Adam relationship. I definitely got to wondering what was the deal with them...that there was attraction was obvious, that there was tension there was obvious as well. I loved the power struggle between them.

I also really enjoyed earlier how brave Mercy was to try to help Mac when he was cornered by the two thugs. That took guts when she was obviously weaker than the werewolf but stepped in even knowing that.

The fight scene was always upsetting. Not knowing what's happened to Jesse and Adam being hurt so badly. The part with Mercy realizing he's still alive...whining happily and licking his face. It's a nice moment.

I'm at the part now where Mercy is in the woods and surrounded by the Cornick family and Bran has grabbed her by the nose as a welcome and a chiding. I love the implication that no matter what Mercy thinks Bran loves her. How could I forget to mention the introduction of Leah, the werewolf we all love to hate.  LOL

I'm just gonna drag you all along with my re-read!  ;D

I KNOW!

And you know what was hard - Sam was a fantastic option too usually I'm more gung-ho on one choice but I would have been happy if Mercy chose him but then Adam was the better suitor for the long run and I think she made the right choice. But I think it was one of the best love triangles I read - and I'm not a fan of this trope :D

I was worried about how Patty would handle that but she did it beautifully.

At first, I wanted Sam and Mercy but then with each book, I changed my mind. I'm glad it's Adam and Mercy, they really fit together.

I'm burning through the book. I have to stop myself from flipping to scenes that I adore. It's hard to resist doing that.

Warren's introduction really started my love for his character. His rescue of the woman at the Stop and Rob. His friendships with both Mercy and Adam and the hints of his despair over not being about to tell Kyle the truth about himself. The fact that all he wanted was a pack and he found that because of Mercy.  :-LOVE

Zee and his dagger having a nice taste of Samuel.

Meeting Stefan for the first time. I've always been a bit unsure how to take his character. I feel like Samuel in that I've never really trusted him for some reason.

So many great moments...

I finished Moon Called last night and it remains one of my favorites of the series still. Someone mentioned on the Smart Bitches site one thing that they liked about Mercy and I have to agree to this, she has friends. She's not an isolated urban fantasy female but one with ties to many people.  I like that this book has Mercy with friendships and relationships outside the idea of an HEA. That these people were important to her and that she would sacrifice to help them, I liked that she recognized that she was over her head in several situations but still continued on to help those people she cared about.

I loved that Patty has written secondary characters with such depth that I could happily read books about them as well. Warren, Kyle, Ben, Samuel, Bran, Stefan, Honey, Zee...the list goes on.

I loved to see the growth of Mercy from that impressionable, lonely sixteen year old girl to a woman who knew herself and what and who she wanted (sort of ;) ) We had the reality of the woman battling with the memories of the girl.

I loved reading about Mercy's relationship with Jesse and their mutual love and respect.

I loved reading the dance between Mercy and Adam. How they infuriated each other but made each other laugh. How they relied on each other, how they were attracted and maybe didn't want that but were drawn to each other. I felt for Mercy when Bran told her that he had asked Adam to look in on her and how that devastated her but how she had the guts to ask Adam about it later. I loved how Adam told her right out he was watching her for himself. I loved that he took steps to protect her even though he knew she wouldn't like it.

I loved that Mercy earns her own way and loved the garage and the work she did.

I loved Moon Called.

Moving on the Blood Bound! Vamps and Sorcerers, oh my!

When Mercy pulled the van over Told Adam to stay put and ordered Sam out of it! Best ever!

I loved when Mercy told Kyle about werewolves then later called Adam a Manipulative bastard!

And when Sam broke up the fight and sent his power all through Warren's house.

Some notes & random questions they generated in a recent re-read.

pg 41, Mercy mentions g-grand dad's uncle was gutted by a moose... Laz Long's grand dad's father? had something similar, is this deliberate homage?

Medea in the cat carrier; does Mercy own it, or Adam?  How did it come available for him to use it?

pg 10, Adam warning her she's there on his sufferance; really? If he moved the pack there to look after her for Bran?
pg 12, Margi president of PTA?  Nan still in high school then?  Ready to drink at wedding?
Title: Re: [Mercy #1] Moon Called Discussion
Post by: Kristenann on April 08, 2014, 04:49:17 pm
When I read that part I assumed Adam bought the cat carrier I just don't see Mercy letting him borrow it just to put Medea into knowing her doesn't like her to roam around his yard. Mercy said Medea smelled like Adam so she knew the cat spent some time being petted on his lap before he brought her home, maybe he didn't mind Medea on his property as much as he thought one of his wolves one night might get ahold of her. Adam was divorced from his ex for four years and declared Mercy his mate in front of the pack, what two years ago before Moon Called? I wonder if he ever planned to tell her about it, or if he ever planned on letting her know he had some feelings for her before the events in Moon Called took place? Or if it was the added nudge of saving Jesse's life and his twice that pushed him to that point? I thought it kind of odd how Samuel told Mercy one of Adam's jobs was to make sure she didn't go around telling people about the werewolves too. Mercy might of needed the protection of Adam declaring her his mate against the pack, but since everyone's scared of Bran and Mercy basically grew up with him I'd think that'd also be a big red flag to any of them wanting to hurt her.
