Title: Down These Strange Streets | In Red With Pearls Discussion
Post by: Elle on June 03, 2011, 10:52:17 pm
Spoilers and speculation. Poor Warren has terrible neighbors. Apparently, nobody told them that antagonizing a werewolf isn't as fun as it sounds.

Moved to published books area for non-spoiler discussion. -- Elle

Out of all the books that are coming out this year that I want to get, this is without doubt the one I'm the most excited for. A whole story of Warren  bOuNcY bOuNcY :-LOVE :-*  :-* I can't wait, I just love this man.

I'm interested to see how he handles his neighbours. It's mentioned a few times in the Mercy books about how good Warren's control is. But I can't help but wonder about how he deals with it on the inside as oppose to the calm exterior he has.

I'm excited to get into Warren's head as well! He's always been a favorite character.

He lives in a townhouse with 2 apartments side by side, right?  I hope the neighbors aren't too nosey that could be a real issue.

When he's not living with Kyle, he's in a duplex, isn't he?  One of the alphabet houses?  It'll be in his ID card.

We need to have some kind of meditation available on the board to help us through these waiting periods.  ;D

This is the first short story we've had of a main character from the Mercy 'verse in their POV. I'm so glad it's Warren.  I cannot wait either.

The little blurb doesn't say, if Kyle is in on the problem. Can you think of the two of them together coming up with a twisty revenge? >D

(By the way Star of David was told from David Christensen's point of view.)
Title: Re: In Red With Pearls Discussion

I don't really consider David as a main character though. More secondary, for me anyway.

I totally agree, Kyle and Warren are a pretty unstoppable team.  >D

I'd say Warren is secondary, repeating, David is tertiary.  My POV, not a ruling, obviously! ;)

New authors always helps! But so does wildly guessing and seeing how close we come.

I can't WAIT for this one. I've always loved Warren and Kyle, and it'll be nice to see a glimpse into their lives outside of the pack. And I sorta feel sorry for Warren's neighbors. I'm sure they're going to get WAY more than they bargined for messing with the two of them.

Down These Strange Streets came in the mail today.  Finished "In Red, With Pearls" a bit ago.

WARNING!  SPOILERS UNDER BLACK BARS!  DON'T READ UNTIL YOU'VE READ THE STORY!

DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU!

Given that we're much more familiar, obviously, with the internal dialogue between Charles and Brother Wolf, it's interesting to see how the relationship works with someone else.  Warren refers to his wolf as separate from himself (for instance, when he claims Kyle as his mate, which, BTW, *HAPPYDANCE*) and when he uses the wolf to throw off Nadia's spell, we get a little glimpse of it and see that it does exist independent of the human consciousness, but for the most part Warren-the-human is who we're dealing with.

And, more interesting than that, he's not doing that constant balancing act that both Charles and Adam (from what I can tell of Adam) seem to get stuck in when they feel their loved ones are threatened.  Warren got shot and didn't pull out the wolf until he realized that Nadia had him stuck in place with a spell.  He was already in a stressful situation - someone is trying to kill his mate!  Yet he reacts calmly and logically, and kills with cool efficiency.

...in the Fair Game speculation thread, Patti suggested Charles deserves an assistant.  I vote we nominate Warren for the job.

Sorry, I was in transit on my way home from work. :)

I think this is a solid foundation on what could be a new series for PI Warren and his lawyer mate. They were pretty much adorable. I love how much Warren has changed over the years but still remaining smart and tough. I enjoyed the call back to Elivaveta and her grandson as well.

The story was awesome! Got it from my library, so I'm trying to read it as many times as possible.  I liked the justice meted out to various characters; appropriate in each case.  The first note cracked me up; I had a roommate who hated confrontations, so she'd leave notes whenever she was unhappy.  She wasn't psychotic, though, just a little overly fussy.  ;D

I particularly liked the discussion about witches, and how hard it is to "walk the line" of attain enough power to be effective without becoming completely evil.  We got a teaser taste in the second Alpha & Omega book, and I've wanted to see more elaboration.
Title: Re: In Red With Pearls Discussion
Post by: DandelionWine on October 12, 2011, 03:58:12 am
LOVED the story, the book otherwise was a waste IMO.  I suppose other people with other tastes feel that way about their personal favorite authors, but I really didn't think the stories were very cohesive as a group, and I'm a reader of broad tastes.   Most of them just didn't feel like actual uf to me even in the broadest sense of the term.

As far as In Red itself goes though, I was sorry that someone who 'could' have been another friend to Warren turned out that way, but some distance is important I suppose, and it highlights the ways that power can corrupt as well as how lonely a life a were's is.  It's best to keep that distance for the most part...

The thing about Elizavetta using Robert to increase her power was one of those "DUH" moments for me!!!  I can't believe I didn't think of that though!  Of COURSE she'd use him!  Shows that I could never be a witch in Pattie's books, I just don't think that way.

I think Warren being a PI is perfect in so many ways.  An asset to Kyle, the pack and an asset to future book plots too!  He likes to help people, and dislikes slime-balls, so he's going to get to have some fun!  Good thing he's got such good control though, the slime-balls may not be very appetizing for snack purposes, but still awfully tempting I bet!

Doesn't Mercy say that about hunting at some point?  That she's not a cat, she doesn't play with her food?  Or is it someone else?  Or am I even thinking about the right world?

...just because you're not a cat doesn't mean you won't dismember someone/overkill if sufficiently displeased by them.  See also: Moon Called, Iron Kissed

I think the biggest thing is that it shows Warren's personal Tolerance and how he can use that tolerance to increase his control. He has ALWAYS had to maintain more control in stressful situations that your average wolf doesn't because his own nature creates extra angst. So he has to keep his emotions in check more. He has to control his impulses more.

I was intrigued by the way Patty portrayed her zombie.  Usually I get the impression they're somewhere between the "Brainzzzz" shambling horrors, the movie voodoo zombies that are sort of like limited intelligence robots, and the ones with the navigators in the Ilona Andrews books.  This was very, very different.

Warren is a very good PI. I like how he handled all parties involved in Kyles attack. It shows us that all though his control is good he isnt the gentle wolf that everyone thinks he is. I love it!!

Oh Lady of Mercy! Purple cowboy outfit...

Doesn't it say in Moon Called that Warren has both sides of his house? I could certainly live in one of those...

OKAY! GENERAL COMMENT!

I absolutely, completely & utterly HATE those spoiler bars! I don't have a cent in my name, so I have to survive on spoilers until such time I can afford to buy the books/e-books...you are nasty nasty nasty peeps! I wanna cry... :-' :-' :-'
Title: Re: In Red With Pearls Discussion

Nasty for buying the book or nasty for discussing it? ;)

I think you'd like the discussion since you mentioned enjoying the spoilers. This thread is actually going to be moved soon to general discussion so there won't be any spoiler bars.

Moon Called makes no mention of Warren owning both sides of the house, he just has the one.

This story revolves around Kyle's house.

I think one of my favorite things about this story is having it from Warren's POV. I love his character so this just really helps to flesh him out and how he thinks and acts. He has such a strong personality but he's very laid back and very much a werewolf. I really enjoyed how he got in Elizaveta's face and made her back down.

If I'm not mistaken, in the last chapter of SB, when Adam & Mercy make use of it, there is mention of the "for rent/lease" sign for the other half of the duplex.
Title: Re: In Red With Pearls Discussion
Post by: ElefiNecol on January 13, 2012, 06:40:55 pm
You remember correctly.  Warren has an apartment SB-334 and the second half is/was for rent,"Both sides were dark - and the other duplex had a FOR RENT sign on the window." SB-334
Title: Re: In Red With Pearls Discussion
Post by: DandelionWine on January 14, 2012, 12:34:12 pm
Yeah, it's for rent, but I'm not sure who would rent it.  Not much of the rest of the pack would be comfortable living next to Warren, partly because of prejudice, partly because he's so dominant.

A mid or upper level dominant who disliked him would possibly/probably have an urge to challenge him pretty much the whole time they were near each other without Adam around to stand between them.  It's not as if anyone might not want to challenge him leaving the whole gay thing out of the picture, that's probably fairly normal and so probably fairly manageable, but since wolves are often grumpy, if they are angry about Warren's lifestyle, it just adds to the grump-soup.

Sam might not have any trouble with Warren's being gay, but I see him as wanting to keep himself and Ariana away from most of the pack except for certain circumstances.  Also, Ariana probably wouldn't want to be that close to another wolf... though Warren is mighty considerate and all.  Also, Warren as we know isn't as easy going as he appears to most and may not want as strong a dominant as Samuel all that close.

Maybe one of the submissives would be ok there, Warren would probably make them feel safe... I could see the Pack renting it too just to keep it empty or for emergencies, but I think it was made clear that it was for rent and so empty so there'd be no question that any pack noise would cause a stir with tenants being so close that they'd hear a fight or even just pack business.

Title: Re: In Red With Pearls Discussion

Ahem.  Warren's not out as were, and most of the population of the TriCities is not were.
Title: Re: In Red With Pearls Discussion
Post by: DandelionWine on January 14, 2012, 12:56:03 pm
No, I didn't mean the general population, just that people were saying that Samuel could live there, and I think I saw some mention of other pack members living there, if not in this thread, in some other one.  I just don't see why anyone from the books would rent that and now that people are aware of the weres, it's more important that there be no clues about pack activity, so they'd want to keep civilians out of there, or so I would presume.
Title: Re: In Red With Pearls Discussion
Post by: Patti L. on January 14, 2012, 01:34:13 pm
It might be a good candidate for a 'clean' or separate safe house for the pack to use when they have a guest, like Bran, who isn't out, but needs to stay a day or two or ten, so he's/she's not connected to the pack by staying at Adam's house.
Title: Re: In Red With Pearls Discussion
Post by: DandelionWine on January 14, 2012, 01:48:12 pm
True.  I remember thinking when I first read Moon Called that it seemed dangerous for a were to live in a duplex that way.  I've lived in both duplexes and in apartments and while either could be made more sound-proof or secure, mostly I've found apartments more so than duplexes.  No idea why they build the division between duplexes so cheesy, but they seem to!  Maybe it's just because the ambient noise in apartments is louder and it all just blends together?

Also, I've lived in base housing which I believe is extremely similar to the houses described in the books.  They are crap for privacy.  Many date back to WWII though most have been remodeled to some extent, still nowadays they'd be considered suitable for only low rent housing.

Anyway, later it became clear that Warren being a lone wolf when he moved there, probably felt perfectly safe being there because he avoided all wolves and he knew his own control was excellent.  Once he became part of the pack, they still didn't socialize.  anyway, the next door apt being empty was either just to make a point that it was safe for the pack to make noise, or else a clue-bat that it's going to be used for something in Mercy VII

Oh I agree, I think the 'for rent' sign was just a device to let us know that there weren't any civilians around to worry about so we needn't wonder or worry.  Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Popping in a little late to the party.

Personally, I loved this focus on Warren and Kyle. I'd also be interested to see how life changes if Warren does "officially" move in. It's one thing for a person to spend most nights there and it's another when the living together is an all the time thing, especially when it comes to more exposure to the pack.

Also, I liked the way Warren figured out the zombie was a zombie. I'd never thought about it before, but it made good sense.

I read this again last night. I just love Warren's voice. I love how he looks at situations and his relationship with Kyle and how he and his wolf are ready to make that commitment to be mates.

Parts of the story are pretty grim but it's so funny in some places it's just such a fabulous glimpse into one of my favorite characters.
