Steal the Dragon Discussion
« on: August 01, 2007, 12:46:27 pm »
Okay excited. I've been on holidays and found "Steal the Dragon" in this rather super bookstore I stumbled across. Fabulous! Now All I need is some time to recover from my holiday to sit down and read it. :D Still on the lookout for "When Demons Walk" and "Masques".

You should be able to get Steal the Dragon online or at a book store. The other would be harder to get as it's out of print.

I could order them, but it's kind of like a treasure hunt. I'll go into this out of the way bookstore or used book store and explore. Sometimes I get lucky and find a book on my list...other times...the hunt continues.  :)

Much as like the Mercy series I am pleased to see others looking into her other works.  I now own all but one of her books and found them all worth the effort.

Should one read Steal the Dragon before When Demons Walk?  I have the latter, but haven't found the former.

Dragon comes before Demon chronologically, but it's irrelevant, because each of the books in this world involves different characters at considerable distance from each other.  All of them take place in seperately created countries, Ms. Briggs is so good at world building.

There is an over arching chronology and important world events that link the books (think more the election of a president and the course of a war) but, while there may be some spoilers, it shouldn't affect your overall enjoyment of the stories.

Which is to say, go ahead and read When Demons Walk.  It's one of my favorites of her early work.

Excellent!

While at work the other night, I did a search for all books by "Briggs, Patricia" and Steal the Dragon didn't come up.  When I did a title search, it came up, but it seemed to have listed her as 'artist' and not 'author'.

Just something to be aware of if you are recommending the books to people.

I've read that there are no dragons in this book, does anyone know why the title is "Steal the Dragon"?

Yes, as it happens.  There's a game, somewhere between chess & 'D&D' called 'Steal the Dragon' played by a couple of the main characters.  The phrase has significance to them.  Oh, and to the plot.
Also, 'Masques' is rediculously hard to find, a copy can run over $200.00 on ebay.  Check used book stores & friends' libraries for it, or grit your teeth & wait for the polished up version with sequel Ms. Briggs is working on around the edges of the Mercy & Charles & Anna books she's contracted for.

So, I bought the old cover version of Steal the Dragon a while ago, but didn't realize it was by the same author, and I managed to lose it :( So, I bought the new cover without realizing I had already read it and found myself going "huh" I think I've read the before. And I have, but I think I enjoyed it even more this reading :) Great book! I want sequels to both D:

I found Steal the Dragon in my library on Thursday and read that night :)  Now to see what other Briggs books are hiding in the library lol.

Think was a new copy as a pay loaner one so suspect someone recommended they buy Patricia's books.

One of my favorite scenes is when Tris discovers Rialla already knows how to play his very complicated game and it won't be an easy win.

Steal the Dragon as in - Steal the Dragon game
« Reply #24 on: February 16, 2012, 06:51:14 pm »
There was a great scene in steal the dragon where she totally snookers him and gets to cheat into a winning position.

Which only made the fact she considered herself a good player, all the more hilarious when she couldn't win a single game after that one.

I also liked how he told her he learned to play the game.  From an old shape shifter of some kind as I recall.

I think this character had flashes of the sorts of humor, Patty is able to work into her Hob's Bargain, Raven, The Were's, but it was clearly an earlier work.  Had a lot of the pieces and flow.  Just not quite up to the A+ level yet.

P.O.P.

A: Get yourself turned into a werewolf and go back to rip their freaking heads off.
