If you're hitting the YA section, try Patricia Wrede. While Dealing with Dragons, Searching for Dragons , and Calling on Dragons are prequals to Talking To Dragons and are, to me, definitely YA, Talking to Dragons has some subtle humor and exceeds that classification. At one time The Science Fiction Shop in NYC had it in a rack labelled "For Children (And Discriminating Adults).
Some of her other work is labelled YA, some isn't, I don't know how the line is drawn. But for an easy read with pleasant stories you could do a lot worse.

Jennifer Estep's YA series are easy reads check out Touch of Frost and Kiss of Frost.
