Wolfsbane Discussion
« on: November 02, 2010, 08:30:37 am »
I finished reading Wolfsbane about three hours after it came out, since I bought the kindle version. I am highly intrigued by the actual Dreamer, and the fact that the Master Spells were basically destroyed in Steal the Dragon. And was there a hint of Aralorn in Steal the Dragon, when Rialla mentions somebody teaching her the game.

What a wonderful read!

]I loved Aralorn's family. Wolf had a fantastic arc and the Wolf/Aralorn relationship development was quite delicious! I'm quite intrigued by the Dreamer as well.

I liked Nevyn's comment about how evil destroyed him but tempered Wolf. The visits to the death goddess' temple were interesting as well.

I'm perfectly willing to pressure her.  If she's going to taunt us with that last bit about the Dreamer and its plans, then she should expect to be pressured.  LOL LOL LOL >D

Wolfsbane does seem to have set us up for future stories. I like how Masques and Wolfsbane filled out the Sianim worldview very well. There is also a lovely argument about the freedom of knowldge running through Wolfsbane. Wolf is firmly of the opinion that knowledge of bad things should be suppressed. His experience has taught him if you know something bad you will use it for bad purposes. He has no problem destroying books of black magic. Sham in When Demond Walk is in desperate need of this sort of information to rid the world of "evil." She searches libraries for this destroyed knowledge. It is as if there is an argument running through the series. Now this could all be in my head and someone else could have a very different interpretation.

I agree with Ellyll, that last little bit at the end does leave us hanging just a bit; but does fantasy need to have a nice, cut and dry ending?  I think Patti just wanted to give us something to think about, and remind us that all will never be perfect in any world, even one that's been imagined.  Kind of like "realistic fantasy," art imitating life, maybe?  Gosh, why am I so philosophical on a Saturday afternoon?! :-whistle

On the other hand, maybe she wanted to leave herself an opening for another book?

In any event, please do more Mercy and A&O first!!!!

You have three choices, KissaD.  There are instructions on using the spoiler bars posted several places, and you can check those, if I'm not clear here. (choice 1)
You can manually type them in, like this (without the *) [*spoiler]what you want to hide[*/spoiler] (choice 2)
You can get up the full fledged "reply box" and click the two buttons that say "spoilers" across the width of both, and type between the ] and the [ on them.  (choice 3)  Hope that helps!

The original question was: It seems to me that Kisrah is telling the story about how Geoffrey died two different ways. The first time he tells Aralorn and Wolf Geoffrey came to him and said he was left defensless in the castle full of Uriah. The second time Kisrah tells to Aralorn, Wolf, Gerem and Nevyn that Geoffrey said Cain killed him. So I am a little confused

I hope to see a sequel to Wolfsbane, I like the characters and storyline quite a bit. It is a different style from the Mercy series, but I really like it. Masques took a little while to get used to, but I found it good as well.

I finally got to read Wolfsbane!

I still have most of a Steal the Dragon set of molds sitting under my TV, if I ever find myself in possession of a bit of free time for some Sianim fun... Anyways, I love Wolf and Aralorn, and their whole world, actually.

Funny thing... when I was about halfway through the book, I realized that Wolf's real name is the same as the MMC of my nano book... also a wolf shapeshifter.  I do my best not to name characters the same as primary characters from books I like, particularly since I JUST read Masques before I started planning for nano, so I feel like a total 'tard for missing this one.  But I guess since Wolf doesn't usually go by Cain, it's excusable...  9)

Art left on a two week vacation the day " Wolfsbane" arrived in the mail and she had to proof read it before me to make sure I could read it , which I can and I love it. Well anyway I call her up to tell her I was done the prydain series and she said  "Read Wolfsbane it is really good."
And I asked her why she is not reading it first and she answered "I bought it over here because I couldn't wait two weeks."
I fell in love with Wolf. And Aralorn's brother . I cannot remember his name but he was not the one in the spell mess but the one with the gorgeous eyes and his name starts with a C.
I almost cried when Nevyn sacrifices himself for her father.

Did you ever hear that old adage: A man marries a woman thinking she won't change, and she does.  A woman marries a man thinking he will change, and he doesn't.  LOL  Seriously, though, I don't think marriage will change Wolf that much.  He's had a long time to know who Aralorn is, and he knows why she left home.  He's not about to try to turn her into exactly the sort of thing that drove her away from home in the first place, is he?

I don't so much think he'd want her to become what she ran from as try to keep her safe now that they are married. I have a feeling more than a few people would try to get her to get to him, just like Nevyn did.

Most of Patty's books seem to deal with the theme of independence, the right to choose one's own path.  When Masques was first published, Patty got seized upon by some hyper-feminist bloggers as a champion of sorts.  Of course, when I told her about it she was barefoot, pregnant and cooking dinner.  We found it hilarious.   LOL

However, we have seen marriages, good marriages, fail when one party becomes too controlling.  Sometimes it's fear, sometimes jealousy, sometimes just carelessness.   I learned very early in our relationship that she's very good about listening to requests, but doesn't take orders.  In fact, if I ordered her to keep breathing she'd probably hold her breath 'till she turned blue out of spite.  :-whistle

I sometimes wonder why independence is such a recurrent theme for Patty.  I may be a little alpha, but I try not to be a controlling pinhead!

All of her female leads are strong women and it takes a strong man to be her equal... I love how all her couples interact!

My favorite part, or one of them  :P , was when she tried to trick him with the blood bond and he knew about it but didn't tell her... that had me laughing so hard!

I am a huge reader of fantasy, or fantasy/romance, and I have my favorite books/series/characters. But I tell you I am close to tears after finishing Wolfsbane because it ended much much too soon. Its just not enough of Aralorn and Wolf. I would have loved to read what they did/thought/talked about in all those large gaps of time. I would die to read what Aralorn did the 1st time she witnessed Wolf change.....and on and on. I hope Patti can see it in her heart to perhaps write 5-15 more books on these new favorites of mine. I bought both books in E-book form, and will also be buying the shelf version, so I may have them within grasp a couple different ways  :-'  Thank You Patricia Briggs for 2 more characters to live in my thoughts/dreams. When I get those shelf versions they will grace the top left hand side...exactly where I now have my C.L Wilson Novels.....sorry Rain & Ellie....please make room for Wolf & Aralorn and learn to deal with it.  8)

SPOILERS

Quick questions:

In Wolfsbane does Geofrey Ae Magi start the plan - by dream walking before being consumed by Uriah. Could he dream walk once his magic was gone? OR was it all Nevyn's alter ego?

When Aralorn (mouse) watches Kisrah and the dream walker that looked like Ae Magi - that was Nevyn's alter ego, too?

I'm new to Hurog- sorry if this is answered elsewhere.

Maybe the Dreamer's plans are to usher in a sequel. On the other hand, the advice to have one's characters act as if they were doing something before the story started and will continue after the end was ancient when the Bard of Avon wrote "When shall we three meet again?"
"Change is the end result of all true learning."

Patty said in one of the recent rash of interviews that while she will write more stories in the Sianam universe, that's all they will be; stories.  She sees some glaring flaws in the universe structure now that make her cringe, so she doesn't feel she can stand to write another full book in it.

No, they're the regular old blow-your-arm off grenades.
I don't anticipate any of them, but I feel like we may be a little bit... premature... in saying that we will accept anything that Patty throws our way.

LOL

It really is too bad that Patty doesn't think she'll do another Sianim novel; I very much enjoy this world.
