Heh.  We ought to haul this over to the Mystery section, Dick Francis thread.  Have you read the first of his Sid Halley books?

It opens with his having been shot in the gut, & Chico telling him he left enough blood soaking into the floorboards to make a tidy blood pudding, much to the shock of the nurse.

Kit & Holly, Alistair from 'To the Hilt', the artist who went to Australia, wine merchant -  Wait a minute, to the mysteries with us, before Cole attacks again!

Swords I took away with me, guns are dismantled & made into improbable vehicles, & there's only one of me, thank goodness.  Or something.  Like Mae West, with me, 'goodness had nothing to do with it'.  :-)

I liked the idea of the watch whers being examined more thoroughly, but didn't feel there was the ground work for the whole 'impressed to a handler, wher handler's guild' or whatever thing that came up in 'DragonsKin'.  How do you-all feel about that?
And I moved to Dick Francis, Cole.  Really.  Look at the time stamps. :-[

I agree, my impression was that they bonded to a group of people. Like leaving a llama with a flock of sheep to protect them.

Well, nearly all we knew about them was the few scenes in the original story or novella that 'Dragonflight' was based on, before 'Dragonsdawn' was written, & they were more or less thrown away then too.

I didn't think they rated a whole book, maybe a short story. What next, a whoel book about the grubs? Honestly, I think the series is pretty much mined out.

I can think of one thing that would seriously revitalize it. . . .
