Patricia McKillip is a lovely writer. I think I have everything she's written. That said, the Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy is an early work, and not one of my favorites of hers. I read the first in Julie Czerneda's Species Imperative trilogy and liked it, but it is intense. I recently found the second in a used book store, but I've been putting off reading it. The first one was not, shall we say, a comfort read, though it's very good writing.

Speaking of good writing and comfort reads, a book club I just joined is reading The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Although reviews were excellent, I had some apprehension, because books set in slavery can be wrenching. Edward P. Jones' The Known World is fabulous writing and very thought-provoking, but it's pretty grueling because it's so real.

The Water Dancer has fantastical elements, and Coates is a truly graceful writer. He neither shies away from emotion, nor beats it out of the reader. I marked nearly a dozen passages, and I can count on the fingers of one hand the books that I've marked at all in the past quarter century. It's a fabulous book, ultimately hopeful for everyone, and I highly recommend it.

I'm reading good things about it on the net.

I think I've got my SF Book Club omnibus of the Riddlemaster trilogy still.  I like it for the most part, but I seriously wanted to smack Morgan and yell at him, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way! Stop dithering in the middle, you're getting people killed!"

"a tad incomprehensible to anyone who isn’t well versed in the rules and patterns of fairytales" That reminds me of reading Gahan Wilson's "Everybody's Favorite Duck." Except that the needed familiarity is with the stories from pulp magazines.

Don't know about the other 4.  I like most Thorne Smith, but this is one of the few that I don't recall clicking for me.

Someone needed to point the original ignorant poster, who didn't believe in sword-wielding females, at a video Ilona Andrews posted awhile back. It was of a Russian double-sword wielding young woman. Most impressive.
