Today is a day of comparisons against other authors, it seems.  This reminds me of when Princess Elspeth asked Dirk what evil was.  He defined it, as I recall, as (In part) a desire to possess what is good or beautiful.  A desire so all consuming that  what it cannot have, it will destroy to prevent another from having it.  Where good involves striving to bring about what is beautiful, and to nurture it.  Something to that effect. (Hah! back to the 'effect' vs. 'affect' problem from the language thread.)

Wow, I am really glad that I am not the only Ward fan.  OK, I haven't gone so far as to chant "Ward, Ward, Ward" when I see the Briggses, but sometimes it comes close. ;)

I really can't articulate why I like him so.  I just do.

I think I really like Ward was when he listed the reason for turning down What's her Name.  That reason said so much about his character that I knew I liked him before, but I LIKED him even more so afterwards.

Now, who will Tolsten end up with?  That is the burning question I want answered. ;)  :D

So far I don't think we've met anyone suitable for Tosten (unless someone has escaped me...)  I wonder if Patty will find something for Oreg to do?  After all, he doesn't really have a job right now, except as Ward's ever-present wizard.  Will Oreg want to strike out and find his own path?

On the Ask Patty page, she kind of implies that he might not survive the next novel (if there is another, which I really hope there will be).  But I hope he does, cause Oreg is such an interesting character.  I think he has Sam beat by miles in both the sympathetic and mysterious catagories.

Yeah, but you're not really in Sam's corner in any regard ;)  Oreg is very cool, but I don't see him as human like the werewolves.  In my mind they are Apples and Oranges  :)

 :'( :'( Noooooo! :'( :'(

But in all honesty, if she's gonna kill off one of the characters, Oreg is the logical choice.   :'(  Tosten has already faced his death and Ward and Tisala...we'll you just can't kill them off.  And I can't see her getting rid of Ciara.  But still, I really hope he survives...

I love me some Ward. I can't articulate it either...but I love his character!

We got a taste of some of the other dragons, I'd love to see Oreg run into them and have his adventure there. He's spent almost his whole existence facing death, I'd like the story to be more about him facing life.

I like Sam.  I just don't like Sam and Mercy.

For me what makes both characters interesting is the correlation between their human and nonhuman parts (characteristics?  it's one, my vocab is shot).  They both have extreme abilities, but those abilities have also caused them to experience great pain.  But while I find Sam sympathetic and interesting, Oreg really captures your imagination.

OMG I knew you were cool PattiL
- I adore Aral Vorkosigan! He is based on Athos of the Three Musketeers.

My good friend and I were going back and forth - she loves Ward, I love Mercy. She likes male protagonists, I like female protags...  ;D
