Can fan fiction be posted on the messageboard?
« on: July 18, 2007, 07:05:16 pm »
Excellent suggestion, thank you.  I'll see if I can get something up in the next day or two.  One of my favorite conventions has a single rule "Don't be a pinhead". . . but I suppose I should be more specific. ;D

On the other hand, I don't want to have a zillion "Thou shalt not's" either.

I probably won't put up a fanfic section.  Patty's kind of lukewarm on fanfics -- they create some copyright problems (through no fault of their authors) and she's a little possessive of her characters.  She read one which basically amounted to character rape, and I think it bothered her.  :-[

Thanks again for the great suggestions.

has anyone made a fan fiction yet? and is it ok if we post it here?

Actually fan fiction is kind of a delicate topic, and I'm not sure how to handle this without hurting anyone's feelings.  If you read the FAQ on Patty's main page there's a fairly lengthy discussion of the topic.  The bottom line is that an author faces legal risks if they encourage or even acknowledge fan fiction.  Our official stance has to be "No. You can't have our permission, and if you write it we won't read it."  Friendly, huh?  Basically, we're legally constrained to be pinheads if we want Patty to continue to make a living writing, which we do.   It's not fair, and we don't like it any better than you do.

Some authors really do get bent out of shape regarding fanfic.  Patty's not one of them, in fact (unofficially) I know she's been kind of tickled with a couple of the fanfics we've seen of her work, including a fairly erotic Dragon Bones piece that I thought she'd freak out about.  So, unofficially, we don't object.  On the other hand, I can't let it be posted here on the forums without potentially weakening Patty's copyright, so I have to play hardball on this one.  Sorry!  :-[

Okay, I was just thinking the other day...I was told in my introduction thread that sharing fan fics here is not allowed. I'm going to assume that's either to avoid lawsuits/the need to add a disclaimer page to avoid lawsuits, or to ensure that the site continues to focus mainly on the subject for which they were made. So, then, if either (or both) of those is the reason, I can't help wondering: Would fan fics about YOUR books be allowed? If not, that's cool, I'm just curious! ^_^

Jacob just a quick note. That's what the fanfic comment is about, no Briggs books fanfic on the messageboard. :)

Boy, Patty needs to answer some questions around here.  This is getting embarrassing  :-[

Jacob:
In abstract, we don't have a problem with fanfic, it's mostly harmless fun, and some of it is surprisingly good.  However, authors have gotten burned with legal issues.  If someone posts a fanfic that manages to predict the plot of an upcoming novel, they may be able to sue the author for plagarism, particularly if they can show the author read the fanfic.  Even if the author read the fanfic AFTER writing the book!  There have also been some issues where an author gives someone permission to write fanfic.  However, due to ambiguity in the wording, the courts have found that the fanfic author is allowed to publish their novel, creating a "shared world".  Authors (including Patty) are control freaks, and don't want to lose control of their characters.  The only safe course to chart is "don't ask, don't tell".

So, Patty won't give permission for anyone to write fanfic.  We also can't allow it here on the forums, because that would certainly be seen as encouraging it and implicitly granting permission.  If you write fanfic based on her characters, she'll never acknowledge having read it.  Even if she reads it, and thinks it was wonderful, she can't say anything.

Off the record, it's rather flattering  . . . although some of the weird furry-porn featuring her characters is a little offputting.  Our official stance is (and has to be) that we don't support fanfic.   It's silly, but it's the only way we can sidestep some messy legal issues.  Sorry about that.

And now you know the rest of the story!  :-)
