Diana Wynne Jones
« on: September 03, 2007, 07:31:07 pm »
I love these books because it doesn't matter where they're shelved, adults are going to get things out of reading them.  Even 'Yes, Dear', a picture book.

Her stories often start with a fairly normal situation, and then something odd happens, and the characters start scrambling around to cope.
Yeah.  Chemistry sets that seem to have been imported from Hogwarts.  Pilgrim parties tearing up the countryside.  A griffin daughter who pushes mountains out of shape.  A witch sister who's trying to kill him.  A puppy who's really the denizen of Sirus, the dog star.

Yes I love her, but she's been around a lot longer than AJ Rowling.

Her 'Rough Guide to Fantasy' is one of the few books I have laughed out loud at.

Oh, I adore the Rough guide.  Have you put it up against the 'Dark Lord' & 'Year of the Griffin', & seen how it seems to be what the pilgrim parties should be carrying?  That's the part that makes me shriek the loudest.

And the sequel, 'Castle in the Air'.
Howl the Slitherer, he he he he.
In my other forum, there's a lot of discussion of LM Bujold's latest work, & somebody was calling one of the main characters, Dag, a Shirker.  Ms. Bujold asked if they'd read HMC, & when they asked why, explained about Howl's slithering, & said Dag might be a slitherer.

And no, that doesn't mean he belongs in Slytherin (sic) House at Hogwarts. :)

And the sequel, 'Castle in the Air'.
I always get confused with Miyazaki and DWJ- 'Castle in the Sky' was released by Miyasaki in 1984- DWJ's book 'Castle in the Air' was published 1990, and then, in order to confuse me even more, they go and turn 'Howl's Moving Castle' into a Miyazaki movie. I never know which is which. :P

I had no idea!  I don't blame you for being confused.  But if you can grab Howl in written form, that should lead you to the sequel (actually, of course, they ought to be beside each other but 'ought' ::), well.) & you can grab it too, read both & be done.  If you want to at all.

And everyone send a good thought Spryte's way, first concert of the season today!

I love Diana Wynne Jones, too.
Actually her 'The Tough guide to Fantasyland' is my first translation work (by the way, it's 'Tough', not 'Rough'). I've translated several of her books into Japanese, though not 'Howl's Moving Castle'.

Wonderful!  That's so thrilling, FH, it's another communicating with the author thing, in a way.  And I apologize about the title.  There is a series of travel guides called 'the rough guide to' whereever, & I just transposed it over.

I think it's an intended pun so I'm sure Ms Jones doesn't mind it if you get confused. :D

I just found out that Diana Wynn Jones has written a new book in her Howl's Moving Castle universe. It's called House of Many Ways and Amazon has it due to come out on June 10, 2008. I read an interview about it and she said that the idea for the book came from multiplying laundry, but that that only features in it a little. I'm super excited!!! ;D

Thank you, dgsholam!  I really enjoy this woman's work.  You go along at the beginning, all normal, and then something just not normal* happens, & the characters simply cope, and it gets stranger and sillier, and more fun.

You guys mentioned that "Howl's moving castle" has a sequel called "Castle in the air". Did you know that this year there is another sequel out called "House of many ways"? I just put a hold on it from my libary, it's 'On order' so I am not sure if it really out yet. I thought you guys might like to know about it.

.... Darn after I posted this I realized that someone already mentioned it .... serves me right for not looking at all of the post's first :D

"The Pinhoe Egg" is a recent addition to the "Chrestomanci" universe, and I believe the title of the latest from "Howl's Moving Castle" world(s) is "House of Many Doors" or something to that effect.

Sorry, I saw the title at the top of the page just now; I was trying to bump the thread up.  I haven't gotten to read that one yet.

I finally gave in and bought every single one of DWJ's books (other than the ones for younger kids).

The only two books I need to get/read are CHANGEOVER (which is out of print) and ENCHANTED GLASS (the new book that came out this year).

Does Changeover have a different title in other editions/countries?  I don't recognize the name.  I know that "Black Maria" was printed under "Aunt Maria" in the US.

I don't think so. Changeover was DWJ's first published book. It's a little unpolished I hear but it is also one of the two books she lists as "for adults" in her website. Since the other book is Deep Secret (my all time fave), I'm very curious.

My sister posted on my facebook wall today that DWJ has passed away. I've been looking around online for confirmation, the most I've found is various blogs posting the same thing and link this site as a source: http://www.sfsite.com/news/2011/03/26/obituary-diana-wynne-jones/

My sister wouldn't lie to me about something like this (she loves her work too), so assuming this is true it truly is a loss, I loved her Chrestomanci series.

It does seem to be true. The wikipedia entry has been updated, saying that she died today at age 76.
