Simple Gifts is an old song, and the tune may be even older.  It shares a tune with "Lord of the Dance", and I've heard that the tune dates back several hundred years.

When I think of the song, I always think of how it was performed by Mark Tyers, on the the album "The Very Best Dreams".   Mark was married to science fiction author and flautist Kathy Tyers, and recorded a couple of albums featuring his guitar and excellent bass voice backed by her flute.  The performance is powerful and moving.  Sadly, Mark passed away a few years ago, but that's the song I remember when I think of him.  I just went to Kathy's web site, but it doesn't look like they're selling that CD any more.   You might see if you can track down a copy somewhere, it's a great one.

Here's a version from YouTube, though it's done as a Choral Piece, which has a slightly different feel.
