i remember in the hob's bargain it was mentioned that a dragon was sacrificed to bind the magic.  i often wondered if that was seleg and the rose and gold dragon that oreg wanted to save.

i think kellen is going to be a bastard in his own way.  he was stuck in a cell for a while, but he's still pompous royalty as he demonstrates to ward on a number of occasions.  i dont know if the power would go to his head, but i can imagine he would encounter some awkwardness.

i was thinking one day (a dangerous thing for me to do) "self, what do you think would be the funniest thing that could happen to that little bastard?" and my self replied "if he fell into puppy love with some girl who was smart enough to run away when he proposed marriage to her."  "and where would she run?" i asked myself.  and my self replied "she would run to hurog and fall for oreg."
and that, i told myself, was the silliest outcome i could hope for.
Oreg steals the king's girlfriend for himself.

also, it would be nice to see some of the surrounding countries.  not vorsag, thats to the south, but to the west perhaps.

I like the picture.  What fantasy would include a scene there?

are you referring to the picture in my signature or on my avatar?  the one in my signature is from when i was in iceland and playing with my camera.  some sort of norse fantasy would take place there i think.

an addition to the post i had previous to that... i could see oreg hooking up with a noblewoman, she'd have the prettiest clothes ever, and he would have a living dressup doll to model for him.

There were all sorts of loose threads in the two books--the religious aspects of the world--there was that cat-god that Ward had had various doings with and was not particularlly thrilled with, there is the god that Ward's aligned with who Ward was apparently able to call on for assistance at least once....

There's the kingdom of the dwarves and their status, AND those underground waterways and where do they connect to, one of the locations is in Ward's domain, where then once came because there had been dragons.

There are as others have noted the wild dragons--and how does Oreg fit in with them, if at all, and what about their ability to shapeshift into humans?

There's Ward's sister married to Ward's cousin, meaning a double dose of Hurog genes in any of their offspring.

Toastedfroglegs: I meant the signiture. I could also se some sort of celtic other world in that setting, or even  a northern native american. I envy you your trip to Iceland.
Paula L: agreed.  What sacrifices to what gods do we have to offer to induce the publishers to encourage our author in this direction?

The publisher seems mostly interested in Patricia Briggs urban fantasy these days rather than her non-UF fantasy.... the rewrite/expansion of that one of her older books has been on hiatus for months, with stove taken up by UF-type tales of Mercy and of Charles.

Try years.  The sequel to "Masques" is on back burner for some 6-7 books.
I was confused by  "with stove taken up by UF-type tales of Mercy and of Charles."
I finally puzzled it out as 'the front of the cooking surface is taken up with Urban Fantasy type tales of Mercy & of Chares."
For some reason, I was reading "stove" as in 'stove in ribs', instead of range.  And 'UF-type' as having to do with UHF range TV stations; how strange is that?

I don't think so. The dragoms from each world seemed to different.

that is true but if they are on different contents which has been speculated already then it is very possible that they are the same species but different breeds like dogs, or monkeys.  just look at the lemur

I think that when she returns to Hurog in 2012 or so, she will write Oreg's story, or maybe something with the Empire :)  Or  the dwarves.  Anyway, I think it would be intresting if she went backward.  This is just speculation though.

This is really an interesting thread.  Patricia has defined many characters and the politics that interesting fiction could come from and go in any number of directions and really tie in well.

However,  I really enjoy Wards character and his thoughts and interactions around him.  Especially with Tisala.  Given the way Dragon Blood ended, and that peoples natures are usually only changed by external events, the relationship between Hurog and the King will continue to be a challenge for Ward to manage that he could ignore only at risk to Hurog.  However, at some point, good king Kellen would learn to trust Ward but would remain guarded for political maneuvering.

I don't think Ward's get would be the ones to be able to turn into dragons (unless it was a reward brought to him by the Tamberlain.  However, this seems more likely to occur through his sisters' offspring (with cousins) or Tychis'.  Ward may return the mage powers to the line, may bring in and attract many more Dragons (from hiding, his finding ability awakened and sharpened by contact with the Bane and a more powerful understanding of Hurog's power) but most importantly, honor to the family and province.

Hey, I was not even thinking about some explanation and/or discovery of Hurog's power (which by definition in the Dragon Blood book must be immense).  Hurog is a house of ancient power (consumed the banes power when unleashed).  This has been hinted at but really could turn the world upside down.  In addition, Oranstone is home to the only really active God in the world.  Hmm... these two families have just merged via. two obviously favored individuals.  There would be something to this union as it impacts the world even if the two participants do not recognize it.

As I said,  there is much to develop in this world.

I would like to see Oreg fall for one of Beckram and Ciarra's girl-children. Whether she could turn into a dragon, or couldn't, or could with help... that could be part of the book. It would be interesting to see Ward and Beckram's reaction - they may like Oreg, but as a suitor for a young girl?

I think too that Kellen should be plagued by strange things going wrong, that could only be caused by magic, and for him to suspect Ward. Ward would then have to prove himself innocent (yet again) by trying to find out what the problem was. And I think he should have to go to the eastern land (Seaford?), since we have seen little of that land yet.

I just hope there is a third hurog book. It could go into the plans for wards marriage as well as answer the questiuons about oreg and about what the order that bastilla came from? Wont they have an issue with a mage killing one of their sorceresses? Not to mention someone favored enough to be given their own sorceress to begin with.

Finding out more about Bastilla and her order (cholytes?) would be interesting. I can see them causing all kinds of trouble.

so because i have too much time on my hands while i pack my stuff and attempt to move it into my boyfriend's messy apartment, i have been thinking about the title for the third book!

patricia briggs has said that oreg may not survive the next book, maybe part of the story centers on him.
so i nominate the name "Dragon Breath" both to allude to the notion that some dragons breath fire and to point out the symbolic "breath of life" inside of every living creature.

also, a side note, or a continuation, or whatever,
if oreg had a girlfriend, and then he DIED, i think this song would be the girlfriend's theme song.

Forgiven by Within Temptation

Couldnt save you from the start
Love you so it hurts my soul
Can you forgive me for trying again
Your silence makes me hold my breath
oh, time has passed you by

oh, for so long ive tried to shield you from the world
oh, you couldnt face the freedom on your own
here i am left in silence

you gave up the fight
you left me behind
all thats done's forgiven
you'll always be mine
i know deep inside
all that's done's forgiven

i watched the clouds drifting away
still the sun cant warm my face
i know it was destined to go wrong
you were looking for the great escape
to chase your demons away

oh, for so long ive tried to shield you from the world
oh, you couldnt face the freedom on your own
here i am left in silence

you gave up the fight
you left me behind
all thats done's forgiven
you'll always be mine
i know deep inside
all that's done's forgiven

ive been so lost since you've gone
Why not me before you?
why did fate decieve me?
everything truned out so wrong
why did you leave me in silence?

you gave up the fight
you left me behind
all thats done's forgiven
you'll always be mine
i know deep inside
all that's done's forgiven
