Oddly, that 'making of' didn't mention having original writer David Gerrold getting inserted into a scene as an extra, playing with a tribble.
The joke was that he was the oldest security guy ever, because he never got sent on an away mission.

I've been in a twitter exchange with someone I don't know about Star Trek Discovery's having a crew member in a wheel chair.
He thinks it's a jarring 20th century piece of Political Correctness.
I've been arguing that it isn't. My view is that there can still be conditions - prenatal, disease caused, or injury - that either can NOT be solved (let's not even get into whether it is "cured") by the new medical mumbo jumbo, or that he might be partway through treatments to get him on his feet again.  Since none of it is discussed on the show, we don't know.
I pointed out the difference in treatment of a blind person from the TOS episode with the female assistant to the alien ambassador who used the sensor net to get around, versus Geordi, just -what, 30 years?- a few decades later.
I also pointed out that there are people whose bodies will reject standard treatments.  I may go back now to some more replies from him.

Who has what to say about it here?   Disclosure:  I have not seen even one episode of ST:D.  (Snicker.)

Some current applicable R&D is in the area of exoskeletons. I'm guessing he thinks they should be SOP by then.
Title: Re: Star Trek
Post by: Patti L. on March 31, 2019, 11:21:35 am
Yeah, maybe.  He seems to think light, maneuverable, not bulky hoverchairs are also possible/likely.  I suspect there would be several options, just as there are now, and some people can't use the 'best' one, just like now, and that's one of the points I'm trying to make to him.  Just like you don't give everyone penicillin for infections, because you'll kill a percentage of the people, who are allergic to it, and others will continue with the infection, because they got a penicillin resistant strain, or - and here's another one - they don't have the infection that they were diagnosed with.
Title: Re: Star Trek

Or perhaps the crew member in question wishes to wait until they get to a specialist doctor before getting it 'fixed'?
Title: Re: Star Trek
Post by: Patti L. on March 31, 2019, 07:48:08 pm
Yeah, that was one of my points too, not so much the specialist, but that they might need him NOW, HERE, regardless, or that he might be partway from original injury to "permanent solution", like the removable partial denture while the area for the extracted tooth gets into the right shape for the implant to be done.

Haven't heard back from him since my last spate of tweets, or it was a bit of a jumble where he claimed "Discovery's not canon, and you're just PC hacks", anyway.

Canon? With the spinoffs being licensed, I'm curious about the defining limits for Sacred Canon.  (Which is a term I've seen in discussions Sherlockian.)
Title: Re: Star Trek
Post by: Patti L. on April 01, 2019, 04:35:40 am
I watched a YouTube video yesterday about 'canon in Trek'.  That guy basically broke it down to "live action TV & Movies are canon.  Animated series is iffy, all other media are not canon."
He did a comparison for the new Trek movie series of younger crew as against the TV show, where he compared the 2 different director/producer pairs doing different Gotham Cities in the Batman franchise.

I could well be crossing books with the movies, but didn't Kirk wear glasses at one point, having a vision problem not correctable by any means? It's been a long time since I read or watched, so it could be I read it rather than saw it on the screen.

I don't recall whose autobiography it was, but the man had lived through a time when insurance agents made cold calls to drum up business. And he came to the point where he liked to draw out the calls by expressing interest. But he could only get them going to the point where they asked for his line of work; there was nothing but a click after he told them he was a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force.
