Title: Movie or TV random musings & discoveries
Post by: Patti L. on November 20, 2011, 11:10:26 am
I remember a movie with Shirley Maclaine & several male stars, including Gene Kelley and Dean Martin as her serial husbands.  One of them was Paul Newman, who invented machines to paint for him, according to the sounds that triggered them, including playing classical music records.  So this is a little spooky, to me:  http://chzgifs.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/funny-gifs-senseless-drawing-bot.gif

(He got popular, rich, famous and arrogant off them, and he was "conducting" them, gloating about how much the last paintings sold for, when they went off programming and killed him.)  :o

The movie is What a Way to Go! (1964).  Also had Robert Mitchum, Dick Van Dyke, and Robert Cummings.....

1950 movie with Jimmy Durante called "The Great Rupert" about "a has-been acrobat and his daughter find a squirrel's stash of cash in their home." Opens with the guy playing accordion for a black squirrel in a tam & a kilt outfit, with an agent coming to see the act of "the greatest lion tamer in the business"

Stop motion squirrel, it seems.

While I was in England I watched a series of shows from Scandinavia. I have since found they form a new genre named Nordic Noir.

I just finished a series on Hulu called The Protectors. http://www.hulu.com/the-protectors. 20 episodes/two seasons. Would have liked to see a third season to wrap up some stuff.

I watched the first season of The Bridge http://www.hulu.com/search?q=The+Bridge+%28SE%29 Which hulu also has. I've discovered they made a second season. Don't know how I'll get to see that.

They have made an American/Mexican version of this. I have not bothered to watch it.

Hulu has the first Wallendar season http://www.hulu.com/wallander-2005 which is entirely enjoyable. Not the one made by Kenneth Branagh.

I got to see the first 2 seasons of Borgen. They have made a third. I can't even direct you to a place to see the first seasons.

If you watched or read The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo , you have a bit of an understanding of this genre. (BTW the book was better.  ;) ) http://www.hulu.com/watch/595853

Look at the size of this snake! (Titanoboa cerrejonensis):

I knew there were some pretty big prehistoric animals, but I didn't know there was a snake species that had ever become that huge! Kind of reminds me of that fictional giant snake from the Harry Potter series, the basilisk.

Yeah, I agree with most of that article, but as Pondhawk said, the script writing would have been a challenge.

Not really actually, they would just have need to keep to what was established as "fact" in the first movie, instead of of doing more retconning than DC and Marvel combined.  :P

I am going to be the dissenting voice in this.

It is easy for us to look back and say "Why didn't you tell him the truth right off the bat?"

Well, that is pretty easy honestly. Ben had no idea what kind of "Person" Luke really is. He has already been burned by Luke's father and his game of emotional grudges. He really has no idea if he is treading that same mine field. So in the short time he has with Luke, he has to watch, and evaluate how he deals with what gets thrown at him. How he deals with coming back to find his home destroyed by Stormtroopers. At the same time, he has to introduce him to this "Mythical" thing called the Force. All the while treading that tightrope of uncertainty about just how stable Luke really is. Again, he is looking at Luke through the eyes of a man who watched his Prodigy turn into Darth Vader. Coming right out and saying "Vader Is your Father" is going to be a problem. It will either embolden him to fight, with a chip on his shoulder for being abandoned, or stolen or all of those things, or even none of those things. Ben really doesn't know. Or he is going to flat out refuse to believe him, then what. The kid now thinks he is a fraud. Well if he is lying about his Father, then what else is he lying about.

Ben really only lied about his Father and Uncle. The rest, the whole "Spirit of Ben" is the Force, and not so much the actual consciousness of Obi-Wan/Ben at all. So any information imparted to Luke through the Force is the Force and it's collective conscious and not any one specific entity. It takes on Ben's likeness, because that is how Luke "Sees" the Force. The same with Yoda, and finally his Father. It's Luke's interface with the Force.

As for telling Luke that Leia is his sister, that is simply because they never had time. He couldn't be certain that telling Luke that he was Leia's brother without being able to tell Leia at the same time wouldn't cause confusion between the siblings that could cause them to not work together. They needed to have a chance together to question Ben at the same time. Once it was over, and Luke was talking to the Likeness of Ben, the Force wouldn't have necessarily thought it important. They were working together, and working very well together. What more could the Force need to help restore the balance. Also, the Force would have been able to tell that what Luke and Leia actually felt for each other was not of a romantic nature, and more a deep sibling caring anyway, so again, it wouldn't necessarily see a need to define it until Luke is put in a position where it starts to dawn on him, and then, the Force through the likeness of Ben and Yoda admit to him they are twins.

Had Ben lived beyond the Escape from the Deathstar, the discussions between himself, Luke and Leia would have been more clearly defined. He would know more about the people Luke and Leia had grown into, and known better how they would have reacted to the truths we take for granted today have read/watched the story actually unfold.

Ben told the story as he saw fit for the amount of time he had to tell it in, and with the very limited information he had available to him when the situation arose.

This reminds me of the scene in ROTLA where the huge guy is blocking his way with the spinning scimitar, and Indy sort of rolls his eyes, pulls out the pistol, and shoots him. That was reportedly after several takes where the script called for him to use the whip, and Ford was exhausted and cranky. I can see a lot more of that coming down the pike.

Probably tempting from his point of view.

I've been thinking about Bester the Psy Cop on Babylon 5, and how he's (in the 3-5 day paused episode "the Corps is Mother, the Corps is Father") using humor to the new trainees to dismiss the importance of B-5 and the Alliance, and President Sheridan, as well as the concerns of non-telepaths.  It finally occurred to me that this is a subtle undermining of concern for "mundanes"; if all things involving them are jokes, the indoctrinated telepaths won't think of mundanes as real people, and will have less difficulty killing or subverting them/us.
I also think that the episode title, which is the doctrine of PsyCorps, makes me think "Dude, that is one dysfunctional family! MY parents got me out of the house when I became adult, they didn't insist on my staying, and trying to force siblings to come back, be imprisoned, or drugged to the point they killed themselves.  They also (in spite of an abusive step-grandfather) did NOT encourage me to do horrible things to grandparents and cousins."  In other words, most of the 'paths have -genetically- mundane parents.  If they kill off mundanes, there will be a VERY limited gene pool to breed more 'paths, and they're signing their species own death warrant.   And what about latents like Susan Ivanova?

Region 1: U.S., U.S. Territories, Canada, and Bermuda
Region 2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East, including Egypt
Region 3: Southeast Asia, East Asia, including Hong Kong
Region 4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean
Region 5: Eastern Europe, Baltic States, Russia, Central and South Asia, Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
Region 6: China

You can change the region code on your PC, but usually only a limited number of times. I don’t know what version of Windoz you run, but you can Google it.

Some musings on how and why the lesbian character presents her super hero persona as distinctly feminine.

This whole article just makes me want to bang my head on something. Specifically, the idea that dress code has anything to do with sexual orientation or gender role or anything other than practical considerations (even if those practical considerations have anything to do with attracting a mate) bugs the H E double hockey sticks out of me. People should be able to code switch without someone doing a grad school dissertation on their choices.

That said, we live in the world as it is, not the world as we wish it to be. This being the case, everything the writer says is valid. As a straight female who wears her hair very short and dresses to balance professionalism with practicality for her outdoor job, I am accustomed to having unwarranted assumptions made about my gender (from those who aren't looking closely) or orientation (from those who are looking a little too closely). It's kind of cute when gay or trans people do it; rather less so when straight people do, because they have a tendency to be weirdly uncomfortable with it.

I just want everyone to dress how they want to dress, and to not be a$$holes about how anyone else dresses. That is all.

I feel ya. At different times I've been accused of having three wives. Fortunately all three were good friends and we just had a laugh.

I've enjoyed the "Silver John" stories since fairly soon after they started coming out, I want to see this.

It appears to be a 1972 release? Or is there a newer version coming out?

72.  I had no idea it existed, I don't believe I've heard of any of the actors before. Not sure how I can get my hands on it.

Interesting article. I loved the film, and certainly didn't see it as blasphemous in any way. The Church hierarchy has historically taken itself more seriously than it takes the teachings of Jesus, IMO.
