I was just recently watching the episode where Mal & the pilot, his 1st mate's husband, are tortured, and there's a lot of BS about the sexual tension between Mal and... is it Zoey?  They were browncoats in the rebellion together, anyway.

At the end of the episode, Mal says to her that her husband had said they had to have sex with each other, to get it out of the way.
Gravely, she says, "I understand, sir.  Take me; take me hard."
They stand there, straining to kiss each other, and there is zero sexuality behind it.
In fact, their lips kept reaching out in a way that reminded me of horses trying to reach wisps of hay that are   juusssst   ooouuuttt ooff reeeeaaach . . . until her husband stomps over, grabs her hand, and drags her off with him, muttering obscure Chinese curses.  LOL

One of my favorites. It reminds me of a friend in high school and his sister whom we spent much time around. A few years after high school, the sister and I ran into each other at a bar...and after having a few drinks and flirtations, we decided to make out :D

At the first kiss and part of lips...we unanimously pulled apart and both spit on the floor.

Looking up we laughed and pronounced kissing each other was too much like kissing family  LOL

@Patti L and @ Grandpappy Wycked, I believe the term for that is Platonic Life Partner and it is never not funny when there is an attempt to turn it into something romantic.

That episode is called "War Stories" and it's one of my favorites in some regards :D.

I gotta go with "Out of Gas" if I had to choose a favorite.   The introduction stories were a treat, and the shifting back and forth between the 3 time lines was beautifully handled IMHO

I really liked "Out of Gas" until I made the mistake of listening to Joss' commentary on it. I normally really enjoy the commentaries, but he did that one by himself and he goes on and on and on in a painfully dull and full of himself way. Painfully. I still like the episode just ... not quite as much now that I know what he thought he was saying! I'm rather fond of "Ariel" myself, and the followup in the next one "I hear you're moonlighting as a criminal mastermind now" :D.

bookworm, are you speaking of my Lord and Master?  ;D  You must not be because the Joss Whedon I know and love could never be described as 'painfully' dull.. cheerfully dull is another story   bOuNcY
All kidding aside, he does get rather deep and pontificate-y at times.
Title: Re: Firefly / Serenity
Post by: bookworm on January 24, 2012, 11:20:24 am
Yeah, it's the pontificat-y part that killed this one :D. Indeed, I normally agree with you, and was unpleasantly surprised in that case!

The terms you're looking for are pompous or prosy.
Title: Re: Firefly / Serenity

Love the series, missed it while I was on deployment and by the time I got back they had taken it off the air.  A buddy lent me the box set and I was hooked.  Personally my favorite is the "Heart of Gold".  It shows all of the character development and lets each of the characters shine.

Indeed, though I thought "pontificate-y" was fun, so I used it anyway. Though I have to wonder, can one be prosy in a verbal format?

I wasn't a huge fan of "Heart of Gold," actually. I thought it had more holes than usual (and not just the one Pettiene puts in Jonah's daddy :-P). I did like the character development for Wash and Zoe, though.
Title: Re: Firefly / Serenity
Post by: Patti L. on January 24, 2012, 08:34:56 pm
Prosy is specifically for verbal pomposity.
Since I don't know the episode titles, I can't participate much, but there certainly are some great one liners or short comedy bits in the series.   I keep coming back to the "I married me one powerful ugly woman" followed shortly after by "I will, by my pretty flowered bonnet end you."

That was "Our Mrs. Reynolds". Its when we meet Safrin/Yolonda/Bridgette for the first time.  Of all the characters that aren't part of the crew, I like her the best.  though the best line of that one was "If someone tries to kill you, you try and kill them right back."

Yeah, it's pretty great :D. That episode gives us the pretty flowered bonnet line earlier mentioned, too.

That is the best summation of the characters I've ever seen.  I'm not in agreement with the agent as being Lawful Neutral though, he says himself that he is a monster.  Monsters aren't neutral.  For Lawful Neutral I'd go for the Sheriff in "The Train Job".  He was lawful, but to all.
Title: Re: Firefly / Serenity

Yeah, perhaps. I did wonder about the placement of the agent, too, but overall it was just too fun to keep to myself.

Ah the oh so debatable alignment chart, how I love thee. Let me count the ways.. :)
Patti why would I use an old worn out word when I can create a shiny new one like 'pontificate-y'!
Speaking of pompous, "Dear Diary, Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy."  Who knew Jayne could be so funny on purpose!

Sadly it is just a rumor.
Or I should say it was an offhand comment made by Nathan that some zealous fans ran away with.
This gives a thorough run down of what happened exactly:  http://unstoppablesignals.com/hnbf/
It would have been epic if it had worked though.  The quote for those fans should be "We ATTEMPTED the impossible, and that makes us mighty."
In either case, you can't stop the signal. ;)

You could also make a pretty shiny calendar of first officers...

That bird is the word.

I liked the article/blog entry, but I'm not sure how much I agree with the take on the isms. -- Because Firefly has its own irksome isms, as part of what makes people in the Verse so ornery and low-down mean sometimes...or noble and fine, others. One of the things about the Verse is that it's designed to give us room to have not-so-nice people and things in it, and to allow the writers to comment without preaching at us.

I agree though, that any of today's problem isms don't exist there, or they've changed into something else.

That not so neat and tidy quality appeals to me.
Title: Re: Firefly / Serenity

I agree, it definately has its own isms, but the major ones are mostly gone.

Title: Re: Firefly / Serenity
Post by: Kyria on February 18, 2013, 10:14:21 pm
Do we have any lovable characters get skewered in the Mercyverse?  Isn't that a Joss Whedon rule?
*thinks really hard*
I can only think of bad guys who get skewered.
Maybe we could make Mac count?  I mean, he died from injections, so we could make an argument for that counting as a stabbing...  Or maybe one of the Primals gets skewered on a River Monster tooth... Or, I don't even really remember how Walter died.

That made me think of Mal talking about his 'boat,' which made me think of Captain Jack Sparrow,

And now I'm picturing Captain Malcolm Reynolds, maybe in Trash, where the Feds get on board Serenity and start tearing her apart in search of contraband, yelling, "STOP BLOWING HOLES IN MY SHIP!"
and getting introduced (in Shindig) as "Malcolm Reynolds" and frustratedly going, "CAPTAIN.  CAPTAIN Malcolm Reynolds."

...good lord.  You know you've been fully adopted into nerdom when you can name individual episodes of a show.  I blame my college friends.  *sigh*

All 100% true, and very well written.
And the author is correct, we love them (And the story as a whole) anyway.

Because in the presentation of the story, Whedon creates an extremely effective suspension of disbelief and allows us to pretend that the outlaws are good guys.  Which is one of the several reasons that Whedon is a genius.  He gives us a hero who is sort of what you expect... and sort of not.

The guy I went on a date with a couple of weeks ago (with whom I'm hoping there will eventually be additional dates, but our schedules have not been cooperating) casually responded "Some people juggle geese," to a conversation we were having.

My response was "Shiny," which of course roughly translates to the badass head-nod of acknowledgment, or, "I comprehend your fandom reference and am also a fan of the 'verse."

This is one of the first ways I knew he was a cool guy.
