Title: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: Gerd D. on June 15, 2011, 05:31:06 am
When I go to the theater, it has to be an action movie.  I won't go see a movie if I think it'll make me cry.  However, once it comes out as a freebie I might try it.

Yeah, one has to be careful, or next thing you know they come up with such strange notions as making movies with a story. LOL

Troll Hunter looks to be a fine, trashy movie:
http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2670304537/

And Quarantine 2, love the tagline:
"The most deadly virus just went airborne... and escape is not an option. (http://www.impawards.com/2011/quarantine_two_terminal.html)"
That has a certain cleverness.

I'm looking forward to John Carter based on the John Carter From Mars novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. No trailers but here's the teaser poster:

I heard about a new movie called "The Raven", which, according to IMDB.com, is
Quote
A fictionalized account of the last days of Edgar Allan Poe's life, in which the poet is in pursuit of a serial killer whose murders mirror those in the writer's stories.

John Cusak is Poe, which should be interesting.

I'm really looking forward to Captain America on the 22nd. I hope it's a good as trailers are making it out to be. It's set in the 1940's and it's the origin story for CA. I like how it'll set up the upcoming Avengers movie.

The new Mission Impossible trailer is also floating around. It looks good, I think it's out in July as well.

Gerd D that Troll Hunter looks like fun, have you seen Dead Snow another norwegian zombie offering, I watched it the other night and got plenty of laughs http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1278340/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1278340/)

Cowboys and Aliens is on my list and looking forward to the next batman installment Dark Knight Rises, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. I watch DVD though, cinemas have too much perfume, cleaning gunk and chemicals in them for me to spend time. Im looking forward to Fast and Furious 5, Transformers: Dark of The Moon, Your Highness (love danny mcbride and james franco together). I love movies as much as books but not chick flicks, never could watch them

Saw the trailer for "Dead Snow" just yesterday on DVD (together with the trailer for "Bloodrayne vs The third Reich") looks fun alright, quite a few nods to "Evil Dead" and such in "Dead Snow" from the looks of it.

Varg I thought of you last night when I was watching a movie called The Warriors Way, its funky and lots of good old fashioned violence  LOL  The female lead is kind of annoying I thought, DH thought she was hot but I liked the cinematography and that it was diffent, kind of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon meets a spaghetti western. You can watch trailers here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1032751/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1032751/)

Varg and Nekogeisha I hope you enjoy Warriors Way, I really liked it.

Dark Knight rises Im looking forward to as well and Cowboys & Aliens.  I cant go to the cinemas to see movies though, total bummer, I love movies as much as I love books and music. We blew our tax refund a couple of weeks ago and bought a 50" tv, now I can enjoy movies a lot more than before on our old 26" that had a red haze across the top LOL. I dont watch TV, just movies (oh ok, I watch the british show Top Gear) Im having a ball re-watching my favourites now though

I hadnt heard about The Help but will put that on my list, looks like an interesting one. We dont really have 'help' here in Australia, when I married my hubby in Georgia he came with a maid, it was ahhhh, hard to deal with. I clean up for myself, I didnt feel comfortable having someone else do it

So I just found out that The Three Musketeers is actually a "variation" of the story as steampunk. While this could be interesting, I admit to being disappointed. I was looking forward to the traditional story.

If Dumas had been aware of steampunk as a way to tell an adventure, I believe he would have used it. Although I still think the movie version with Michael York still comes the closest to the novel.  :)

'The Avengers' looks cool.....

.......but I still protest Marvel's move of replacing Edward Norton with Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner.......idiot move I think......Ruffalo does not have Norton's depth or range and definitely not Norton's level of talent....I don't think he can compete with Downey, Evans, Hemsworth, or Johansson - in holding the audience's attention.....and Jeremy Renner has a way of stealing the scenes he's in even though you never expect it.....Of course, Samuel L. Jackson overshadows almost every actor he's ever been in a scene with.  Long story short, Edward Norton could hold his own with all of those co-stars, or even stolen the show, but Mark Ruffalo is not up to snuff.  Ruffalo should just stick with romantic comedies and 2nd rate dramas.

Anyways....I am still very eager to see the movie!

Not movie, and it may be dreadful, but:

'Beauty and the Beast'

The secret love between a beautiful DA (Linda Hamilton) and a sewer-dwelling man-beast (Ron Perlman) doesn't sound like the best place to start for great television. But for three seasons in the late '80s, CBS' 'Beauty and the Beast' proved the exception to the rule, earning the love of an impassioned fanbase (and 24 Emmy nominations along the way) and an enduring cult following. Of course, the network is currently prepping a reboot to air on the CW. Will fans of the original return?

Emmerich's rumoured next movie:
A movie adaptation of Atari's Asteroids. Sounds more like a job for Uwe Boll to me, but the idea is generally harebrained enough that I have to see it. LOL

On a more serious note, Anonymous looks fun.

Looks really good, but I don't like Kristen Stewart as an actress. So I'm torn between seeing it and not. Might just rent it after it comes out.

Also, I'm seeing The Hunger Games on Saturday!
Title: Re: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: Rob on March 21, 2012, 12:39:02 pm
You know....I have no interest in the Twilight movies, but I do like Kristen Stewart as an actress.  I've seen most of her work and think she's very talented if a bit understated (but I tend to like that in most actors/actresses).  It's a shame that the Twilight movies and the tabloid-coverage of her relationship with Pattinson so overshadow her career.
Title: Re: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: Zealith on March 21, 2012, 02:24:38 pm
I've only seen her and the two of the Twilight movies, were she had no facial expression changes. At all. Which was undoubtably in character, but it kind of soured me to her.
Title: Re: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: Rob on March 21, 2012, 03:14:03 pm
That's what I was meaning by understated....I like a lot of actors who are like that, without a lot of outward expression I mean....Robert Mitchum, Michael Madsen, Kurt Russell, David Carradine to name a few.....the problem with these types of actors, is that they have to get just the right type of roles....which is why most of them are character actors....

.....I'm told I tend to be void of outward expression, A LOT....so that may be why I identify with actors like that....
Title: Re: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: Zealith on March 21, 2012, 03:29:03 pm
I think you can have understated actors without them appearing emotionless.

Back on topic, I want to see John Carter so badly, but they're only showing it in 3D, and I'm not a huge fan of 3D.
Title: Re: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: Patti L. on March 21, 2012, 03:57:33 pm
You can go to the theater, and not wear the glasses.  That works.  I think.
Title: Re: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: Zealith on March 21, 2012, 04:05:39 pm
The image is all fuzzy then. Also, they still make you pay for the glasses.
Title: Re: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: Patti L. on March 21, 2012, 04:21:12 pm
Then I don't know what to tell you.  Wait, as you said, see if it comes out in a clear, non-3D version in DVD.  Or a theater that doesn't do 3D, with a copy made for normal projector.
Title: Re: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: Zealith on March 21, 2012, 04:28:31 pm
I think I'll see it over Easter. There are two theaters in town; one of them will show it normally.
Title: Re: What movies are you panting to see?
Post by: mtomni on March 23, 2012, 07:29:18 am
The theaters in my town are showing John Carter in both 2D & 3D.  I'm planning on seeing it in 2D myself next week.  I get the feeling that I'd better go soon.  I don't think it's going to be around too long.

Snow White and the Huntsman is definitely one that I want to see.  I already have it on my Netflex list for when it comes out in DVD for a 2nd go-around.

Lawless

The cast alone makes me want to see....some of my favorite actors.....Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clark....and the beautiful Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain.....

...But from the trailer, the story and writing look great......and it's based on a true Prohibition-era story, as described in a book by a descendant of the main characters....

.....looks fascinating!!!!

I think I might want to see this film http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=uC4GlNAD5ZA

In Irish cinemas from August 10th 2012. Directed by Jon Wright, GRABBERS tells the story of Ciarán O'Shea, a charming but heavy-drinking local Garda who is tasked with greeting Lisa Nolan, a straight-laced young officer who has just arrived to a small fishing village off the West coast of Ireland. Not that there's much for them to do, aside from dealing with the occasional drunk, and that's usually O'Shea himself. But strange doings are afoot: the crew of a fishing boat disappears, whales start appearing dead on the shore, a local lobsterman catches a strange tentacled creature in his trap. Soon it becomes clear to Garda O'Shea and Nolan that there's something big out there, and that it's hungry. It's time to rally the villagers, arm the troops...and head to the pub!

Starring Richard Coyle (W.E, THE WHISTLEBLOWERS) and Ruth Bradley (LOVE/HATE, TITANIC) GRABBERS is a monster comedy from Irish screenwriter Kevin Lehane. The trailer features the music track Black Keys by The Minutes

The Hobbit, of course! And I am actually going to see Les Mis, even though I'd not planned on it. I saw some interviews from the actors saying that they'd recorded their songs in situ, basically as they were acting. So they didn't record it in a studio somewhere and lip sync. It sounds really intriguing.

The Mortal Instruments : City of Bones. I'm reading the book right now and if the movie is half as good as the book I'll be one happy lady.  :)

I haven't read the book, but I liked the movie.  Some cheesy dialogue bits, but overall yeah, liked the movie a lot.

Gah!  I'm so bad at that question, WR.  See, it's been 30 years since I was a 13-YO girl myself, and I have no kids/teens in my life to serve as context.  It's also a tricky question because I'm not sure what your 13-YO's "hot spots" are.  I mean, what squicks her out or is upsetting.  And as the parent, do you object more to violence...or sexual situations...or profanity?

There is some kissing and clear romantic/sexual attraction between some characters.  (One character is gay, and there's another character who is clearly interested in him.)  And there's a bit of a love-triangle in that you have one girl who is clearly desired by two guys.  There's also some skimpy, provocative clothing in some scenes.  But there's no sex.  There is very little profanity.  There's a great deal of violence.  Some of it is monster violence, some of it is fighting between humans.  (And some of those fights are between men and women.)  I don't remember a lot of blood, necessarily. I didn't find it particularly scary, but it had some suspenseful moments that COULD be scary to some people.

I honestly think it would be okay for a 13-YO.

Bound to eventually, if only in pirate versions.
I understand the author was consulted to some extent on changes; he agreed that for cinematic purposes, Ender should be upped in age.

They're all pretty much scifi.
Jupiter Ascending (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1617661/?ref_=nv_sr_1) Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum:
Quote
In the future, a young destitute human woman gets targeted for assassination by the Queen of the Universe, and begins her destiny to finish the Queen's reign.
Earth to Echo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2183034/?ref_=nv_sr_1)
Quote
After receiving a bizarre series of encrypted messages, a group of kids embark on an adventure with an alien who needs their help.
Lucy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2872732/?ref_=nv_sr_1): Scarlett Johansen
Quote
A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

For those who were breathlessly awaiting my impression of Jupiter Ascending — I had a good time with it.  Mind you, I don’t get to see many movies, so that probably pre-disposes me to being amused and pleased by those I do see, but to my way of thinking, I had three winners in a row:  Guardians of the Galaxy, Big Hero6, and Jupiter Ascending.

Neat perspective. One of the Post's book editors went back and reread the book around the time the film came out. He makes the point that the book itself is not perfect - in some ways, it's a hot mess - but that it doesn't have to be perfect to speak its truth to readers, nor to have an emotional impact that punches above its weight.

I really need to reread the book. I don't think I've read it since I was in 3rd or 4th grade. My memory is more than a bit fuzzy. I just need to decide if I'm going to do it before or after I see the movie.

OK, I use this thread to bring you (in my mind) the good, the bad and the read ugly for 2019.
Ready your seatbelts, take some painkillers and get ready to feel sick...

ALSO: SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!!

Good:
Lego Movie 2  bOuNcY YES! PLEASE YES!
How To Train Your Dragon - The Hidden World. Said to be the last of them... sure it is  9)
John Wick 3. Might be interesting.
Godzilla - King of Monsters (VS Mothra and Gidora)... what can I say, I love giant monsters.
Cowboy, Ninja, Viking... with the actor who played Starlord... the title alone won me over.
Spiderman Homecoming 2. Sounds good enough
IT 2. Yes, please!
Wonder Woman 2. DCs best movie after Batman becomes another chance. Sure, why not?

Bad:
Glas (a cinematic universe from M. Nigh Shyamalan)  :X
X Men Dark Phoenix... the first reviews are in and even the actors hate it. Yes, it will make money but it will be the worst of them all. The last XMEN Movie BEFORE Disney takes over
Dumbo (live action remake)... NO! Just NO!!
DC Shazam!  :X x 10... just forget it DC. It will fall flat on its face.
Pet Semetary Remake... from what I saw NO! Let it rest, please!
Aladdin (live action remake) with Will Smith as the Genie... NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! NOPE!
Ghostbusters 2  >:( would you please let it rest! Nopony asked for a remake and even less asked for a part 2!!!
Fan4stick 2... I am running low on jokes here...
Minecraft the Movie... way to running the Hype-train from 10 years ago!
Charlies Angels (Reboot)... AFK, smashing things!
Men In Black 4 (meets 21 Jump Street)... goes back outside to yell!
Shaft (Remake) A remake from the 2000... Isnt Samuel L Jackson getting a little bit too old for this?
Transformers 6 aka The Reboot  LOL Really? REALLY?!? What comes next? The Terminator?
Terminator. Another reboot. With Arnold as the Bad Terminator. MAKE IT STOP! I SURRENDER!
Lion King CGI remake. They just couldnt leave it alone, could they?!?
New Mutants (XMEN)... thats how to beat a dead horse.
Sonic The Hedgehog - The CGI movie.  :-' Kill it with fire!
Frozen 2. You know what? I am out! Nothing can be worse than a sequel to a good movie and... what is that?
What could be worse than a sequel to a great movie? A bad one:
HE MAN and the Masters of the Universe  :X :X :X

I dont know:
Hellboy (Reboot)... really? Another one? Arent we suffering enough?
Captain Marvel... we will see about her...
Avengers 4. If you ask why its here: The leaks tell us that Tony builds a time machine and changes everything.
Star Wars 9.  ??? Disney, please understand that Star Wars is NOT Marvel!
Pets! Part 2. As if part 1 wasnt enough... but I would give it a chance.
Toy Story 4 - A new beginning... why?
Topgun 2.  ??? ok, might be a surprise
Adams Family.  :o Who thought about that?
Bond 25 with a new actor. Might be good, who knows?

After going through this list I just need some rest.

this trailer looks and feels weird. And far away from what T1 and T2 was.
But I will go and watch it.
