Title: Jennifer Estep
Post by: lilliana on March 24, 2010, 05:16:31 am
Spider's Bite: An Elemental Assassin Book by Jennifer Estep (Next book coming out May 25th called Web of Lies)

This book had me at the opening line...

"My name is Gin, and I kill people."

Here is the description from Barnes & Noble:

They call me the Spider. I'm the most feared assassin in the South — when I'm not busy at the Pork Pit cooking up the best barbecue in Ashland. As a Stone elemental, I can hear everything from the whispers of the gravel beneath my feet to the vibrations of the soaring Appalachian Mountains above me. My Ice magic also comes in handy for making the occasional knife. But I don't use my powers on the job unless I absolutely have to. Call it professional pride.

Now that a ruthless Air elemental has double-crossed me and killed my handler, I'm out for revenge. And I'll exterminate anyone who gets in my way — good or bad. I may look hot, but I'm still one of the bad guys. Which is why I'm in trouble, since irresistibly rugged Detective Donovan Caine has agreed to help me. The last thing this coldhearted killer needs when I'm battling a magic more powerful than my own is a sexy distraction...especially when Donovan wants me dead just as much as the enemy.

Description from Publishers Weekly:

Bodies litter the pages of this first entry in Estep’s engrossing Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. In the corrupt Southern metropolis of Ashland, weather witches mingle with vampires, giants, and dwarves. A mysterious client hires assassin Gin Blanco, known as the Spider, to murder a whistle-blowing financial officer named Gordon Giles. Then the client attempts a double cross and brutally kills Gin’s mentor. Now Gin, a stone elemental with a hard-boiled attitude, a closely guarded heart, and a penchant for throwing knives, has to join forces with one of the few honest cops in Ashland, sexy detective Donovan Caine, who hates her for killing his partner. Fans of Estep’s humorous paranormal romances (Jinx; Hot Mama) may be taken aback by the gritty violence and steamy sex, but urban fantasy fans will love it.

This book is a great read. It's fast-paced, dark, gritty, and has a kick butt heroine. I recommend it! :D

Oh, I want to read this! I read all of her super hero books (can't think of the names right now) and thought they were so entertaining, if a little bit silly. I've been looking forward to something else from her.

Am impatiently waiting for Web of Lies!

Yes she does. And unusual. Though does she only kill "bad people"? Or is she not that chosey?
Title: Re: Jennifer Estep
Post by: lilliana on June 15, 2010, 11:08:22 am
Yes, she only kills people who she thinks deserve it. She's very selective on who she kills. No children, especially. No one that doesn't deserve. I doubt she would kill a man who cheated on his wife if the wife hired her. Now, if the man physically abused the wife and kids, I guess she might decide that the man needed to die and take the job. That's how I see it.

It’s funny how I was impatiently waiting for Web of Lies, and then couldn’t read it. I’ve finished now though. :D The one thing that through me for a loop was that when scrolling through this thread, I accidentally hit the only spoiler. Doh! So I kind of was arguing Donovan’s case all the way through reading Web.

I'm glad Donovan is gone - what a jerk. I like the new love interest, Owen Grayson. Mmm.

There relationship was never going to work, the cop and assassin, ha! Though it was inevitable that she would fall for the only straight cop in Ashland, especially when the rest are more crooked than the criminals; opposites attract.

There whole relationship fell down because she blamed him for not accepting what she was. But did Gin ever accept Donovan? I don’t think she did. It’s a touch hypocritical to expect something, but not give it back in return. In the end though, perhaps they were too opposite (and stubborn).

But, I like Grayson. Though I suspect he’s playing his own game.

Overall, I preferred the first book to the second, but I’m looking forward to Venom. Do you suppose this thing with Mab is going to be really drawn out?
Title: Re: Jennifer Estep
Post by: Good Mazoku on July 17, 2010, 09:05:20 am
Was I the only one doing the happy dance when Donovan went away? >D Nope, never liked him. Owen seems much more interesting and I think his metal elemental powers might be only the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. ;D
I hope the confrontation with Mab won't get too drawn out, but has anyone read the amazon synopses yet? I had guessed the little spoiler in there already, but I'm putting it behind other black bars, just so anyone who's more spoiler-virgin than me can decide not to read it. :P

It’s hard to be a badass assassin when a giant is beating the crap out of you. Luckily, I never let pride get in the way of my work. My current mission is personal: annihilate Mab Monroe, the Fire elemental who murdered my family. Which means protecting my identity, even if I have to conceal my powerful Stone and Ice magic when I need it most. To the public, I’m Gin Blanco, owner of Ashland’s best barbecue joint. To my friends, I’m the Spider, retired assassin. I still do favors on the side. Like ridding a vampire friend of her oversized stalker—Mab’s right-hand goon who almost got me dead with his massive fists. At least irresistible Owen Grayson is on my side. The man knows too much about me, but I’ll take my chances. Then there’s Detective Bria Coolidge, one of Ashland’s finest. Until recently, I thought my baby sister was dead. She probably thinks the same about me. Little does she know, I’m a cold-blooded killer . . . who is about to save her life.

Not hard to put 2 and 2 together and see that detective Coolidge is her sister. :)

Donovan recommended her for his old job. Bria and Gin are definitely going to butt heads, especially if Bria is of the same like-mind as Donovan. Watch out for the fireworks.

On a whim I picked up the first two in the series. I like them, quite a bit. I enjoyed Gin very much. I like that she is who she is and makes no excuses for it. I think I ended up feeling much like Gin did when Donovan rejected her. I don't want to say that I was disappointed in him because he was a moral man and I can't fault him for wanting to remain that but he seemed so rigid and disapproving. I want Gin to move on from that and explore a relationship with Owen who seems so much more willing to accept what she is, appreciate the guts it took to get her there and enjoy what she is.

Now that I write about it, I realize that I'm angry with Donovan. I don't think that's ever happened with another character that I've read about. I hope we don't see him again.

I'm looking forward to the next book and love that the timing has worked out that I don't really have to wait for it long. I would definitely be stewing over the last one.

Spoiled it just in case. :)

What annoyed me the most about Donovan was that he never hid the fact that he despised what Gin did (and still does at times) for a living and always went all self-righteous on her, but when it suited him he never stopped her.  >:( I mean, you can go self-righteous and moral all you want, but at least stick by your principle: the fact that it's another one dirtying her hands doesn't mean you're squeaky clean!! So the least you can do is not judging her!! >:(

Anyway, looks like my order's ready to be shipped, I hope it gets here by friday. :-LOVE

Venom's been dispatched I should have it tomorrow. I'm looking forward meeting Bria and figuring out how two people, who survived the same massacre, went spiralling in to polar opposite directions. Of course they have different experiences of Mab’s destruction but still...

I just finished Venom. Honestly, Pendle regarding Gin and Bria they're not really that different but they are...which is kind of neat.

I liked Bria a lot. She's gutsy. Owen was fantastic as well. I don't know when the next book comes out, Tangled Threads, but it looks just a good.

I found out when the new book comes out. April 26, 2011.

Blurb:

I’d rather face a dozen lethal assassins any night than deal with something as tricky, convoluted, and fragile as my feelings. But here I am. Gin Blanco, the semi-retired assassin known as the Spider. Hovering outside sexy businessman Owen Grayson’s front door like a nervous teenage girl. One thing I like about Owen: he doesn’t shy away from my past—or my present. And right now I have a bull’s-eye on my forehead. Cold-blooded Fire elemental Mab Monroe has hired one of the smartest assassins in the business to trap me. Elektra LaFleur is skilled and efficient, with deadly electrical elemental magic as potent as my own Ice and Stone powers. Which means there’s a fifty-fifty chance one of us won’t survive this battle. I intend to kill LaFleur—or die trying—because Mab wants the assassin to take out my baby sister, Detective Bria Coolidge, too. The only problem is, Bria has no idea I’m her long-lost sibling … or that I’m the murderer she’s been chasing through Ashland for weeks. And what Bria doesn’t know just might get us both dead …

That was good! I love Venom and wanted  it to be much longer  :D . As much as I wanted Bria to know who Gin is, I can see why Gin won't tell her yet. Gin needs to be an assassin to take Mab out and she doesn't want to put Bria in the same moral dilemma that Donovan was in (minus the lust of course). I am very happy with Owen and really wonder what it would be like if Finn and Bria hook up? Can you imagine?!?  LOL

I have a feeling that we will Maz. Every book mentions the mystery of Sophia's cleaning methods and we finally see part of it in this one. The next step is for her to teach Gin.

I also hope that "the Mab issue" won't last more than another couple books. I think it would be dragging it too long otherwise. I also think Owen may play a major role in this war, what with his ability as a crafter of swords and the likes.

I picked it up this afternoon and finished it a couple of minutes ago.

I really, really can't find anything wrong with this book. Great plot, great characters, great everything. We seem to delve a bit deeper into the emotional side of things but there is still quite a lot of action. I loved it.

Read Tangled Threads. Loved it. Hope Mab gets her comeuppance. What could possibly go wrong now? 9)

I must say that Fletcher had his fingers in a whole load of pies, saving Bria and everything. And I also wondered about the chances of Jo-Jo being the Air elemental that told Mab her future. I'm probably wrong, but it would be interesting!

I read Spider's Revenge at the start of the month and I must say Gin had a hell of a hard time! It was never going to be easy, but still...third time lucky! She made mistakes and I liked that Gin's starting to believe she's not on her own.

What could possibly go wrong now? A lot of people must have figured out that she's the Spider, and there's something fishy with the millionaire and his floating casino (can't remember his name).

I read and enjoyed it too, but I felt like the way she kept missing slowed the whole book down. I agree that she couldn't have hit with the first one, but she missed several times before they actually fought it out. I do have to admit, I wonder where the books will go next.

Anyone read By A Thread?

I must say I agree with the review posted at ATUF here. (http://allthingsurbanfantasy.blogspot.com/2012/02/early-review-by-thread-by-jennifer.html) That final conversation with Donovan didn't need to happen because everything had already been said. Nothing was ever going to change his opinion on Gin. And when he stormed into their lodge and blamed Gin for Callie's kidnapping, followed by the whole, I'm doing it my way not your way, really annoyed me. Like WTF? I didn't see the point, it was petty.

Though the make or break conversation with Bria definitely needed to happen. And I'm glad that Bria is evolving, but at the same time I don't want her to change too much.

Do you know that she's also writing a YA series? it's called "Mythos Academy" :
0. First Frost (e-novella)
1. Touch of Frost (1rst book, totally understandable without reading the e-novella first)
2. Kiss of Frost
3. Dark Frost (2012)

it's quite good too :)

blurb for book 1:
My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy -- a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest. But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why - especially since I should have been the one who died.
